Why Is ?

The dirt in the crawl spaces so silty in houses that are real old?

It seems as though whenever I go under a real old house, the dirt has such a soft silt-like texture. Does anybody know why that is?

Re: Why Is ?

we have a relatively dry climate, but not enough to suck the moisture out of the ground altogether These crawlspaces usually have plenty of "ventilation". I mean crawlspaces are never "pleasant" but there has to be some explanation why the dirt is so soft. With older houses in particular. Maybe it's just a local thing

Re: Why Is ?

I've seen a silt in crawlers down near the steel mills in Pueblo Colorado. I think it's coke or something.

Re: Why Is ?

I think the dirt is kind of "sifted" for lack of a better term.

Maybe because the dirt gets no light there is no life to it or organic matter, just a guess.
