Tempstar/Heil

My Tempstar heat pump has been acting goofy for a couple of weeks and we woke up with no heat this morning. Unit is about 1 1/2 years old. Have had several different HVAC techs out to look at it. I'm not really looking for anyone to fix it through this forum but I had to replace a fan motor on it 8 months ago (no biggie just a bad bearing but still something that should'nt have happened so soon) and now this. So I'm starting to get very nervous that I have bought a piece of junk and hoping for some opinions of Tempstar (good or bad) in general and a PHF036K000E/HPFM36K000E in particular.

Re: Tempstar/Heil

Hi smellslike$tome

Here we go, I am about to say something that I wish I didn't have to. ICP products is the bastard child of Carrier corporation. This is their builder line of equipment. I consider them comparable to a Goodman. But I would need a little more information about the problem to be able to steer you in the proper direction to fix it. At this point it sounds like the charge is not set properly, yes I said set, that does not mean to put gas until it looks ok. This means to set the proper super heat using wet bulb calculations etc. Give me a little more information and I will help you nail it down.

Good luck
Rusty

I had a call today with an american standard, it had a bad fan motor, the unit was two years old, I would say this unit was a little better quality than the system you own.
Anytime you have something mechanical it may break down, because its working on the time. The unit you have is lower line system, but even the high grade systems break down.
One thing you can do is when the unit is running take a thermometer and stick in the big line on the out door unit and get a reading.

At 1.5 years old, that motor should have been under warranty (5 years on all parts). ICP is not the bastard child of Carrier as said above, Carrier purchased ICP in 1999, ICP operates as a totally seperate entity. Payne and Bryant are however the bastard children of Carrier with Payne being the builders grade. There is nothing wrong with Tempstar equipment provided it was properly installed (as with any other brand). Call the company back and ask them to refund your money....unless they only charged you for the labor that is.

As for the problem you are having now, get a different company to come out and diagnose it properly. Get referrals from friends who have been using a company for a long time with no problems, check the BBB, etc.
