Swimming Pool Heaters

Every year there's more and more and they keep getting more and more advanced. And every year we get calls from fitters looking for advice. I'm unfortunate enough to specialize in these things. So if there's any thing I can help with please let me know.

Re: Swimming Pool Heaters

Do you get free calanders fron Keyspan? They sure are a nice way to heat water, and every year I wind up installing quite a few mostly in the spring.
They seem to work great, however when the bill comes in for gas, thats the end of the pool heater.

Oh, my goodness .... NO KIDDING!!!!

We run our HWH and two gas fireplaces (don't ever turn the furnace on) in the winter and filled our propane tank maybe one and a half times ....

But, last summer (our first year with a pool), we filled our tank twice .... almost $800 per fill!!!!

Re: Swimming Pool Heaters

I really need some help. I have a Hayward heater that I've had for 2 years. When I first fired it up this year it didn't come on. A authorized Hayward repairman came out and said it was the pressure switch. He replaced the switch and it still wouldn't come on. He called his Hayward pump rep and realized I had the pump in front of the heater instead of behind it and wasn't getting the flow pressure needed. He still convinced me the switch was bad and charged me $200 for the call. Now, about 1.5 months later, it's acting up again. The heater runs for about 5 minutes and the burners shut off. I've run a jumper to bypass the pressure switch and it's the same problem. I have a brand new filter that I throughly cleaned the cartridge. It's as if some temperature sensor is shutting the burners down. If I turn the thermostat switch off, leave it for a few minutes and turn it on -- it starts, fires up, then the burners shut off. The fan keeps blowing, but the heat winds down. Something is heating up and shutting the burners down. I'm not trying to bypass income from a fellow contractor, but it's frustrating because the heater is only $600 and I know the next call is $200 minimum. Is there some temperature switch I can jump over and bypass to troubleshoot this? I really appreciate any advice.

My Hayward H200 works 60% of the time, its the other 40% that I get an Ignition Failure. What would you start to look at first, given the intermittance?

Re: Swimming Pool Heaters

Guys,
I need help. I have a Teledyne (now Jandy) Laars Lite LLD Pool heater. The unit starts but soon after the gas shuts off. That's usually an indicator of thermocouple problem. It is an Electronic (spark ignition) system, (not gas pilot). So could not find thermocouple anywhere. I thought there might be a flame sensor. And found their isn't one of those either. What shuts off the gas after start on this type of pool heater? Also, how the heck do you get to the part that shuts off the gas. I am hoping there is something like a thermocouple near the flame that I can access, clean or replace. I also have no idea how to access whatever that part is. There is no easy access from front or top. Anyone w/ experience on a Laars Lite LLD-400N Electronic (Spark) please help....

amazingly well and don't cost much more than a gas heater by the time installation, gas tank etc are factored in. Operating cost $0 an additional feature in areas here it gets hot but cools off at night they can also cool the pool to some extent.

Re: Swimming Pool Heaters

Funny, I've got a Jandy LJ Pool heater doing the same thing. Was working fine, all of a sudden, the heater ignites, runs for about 15-20 secs or so, then poof, out it goes. The safety kicks in, and it just does it over and over again. No code on the digital display. Water flow to heater seems fine. Don't know.

I installed an Enersol solar system on my 16x32 IG pool last year and I'm very happy with it. I installed three sets of panels equaling 120 square feet of collector. Along with a CLEAR solar cover, and at least three days of sun per week, I'm able to maintain 85-90 degrees with an outdoor ambient temp. in the 70's. The manufacturer recommends a 5 panel setup but you can get away with three if you keep it covered at night.

That 230,000 BTU propane heater is just a conversation piece now
