Supply Air To Mech Room, Grille Application Question

My questions are: (1) May grilles be added to a mech room door (36") to allow supply air to mech room ( 1008 cu. ft )for furnace & hot water heater (86,000 btu; combined), or must grilles be installed in partition wall? (2) What is the formula to determine free area of grille required for mech. services?
