Return Grill In The Basement

I demoed all the walls out of my basement last weekend. I noticed there are two registers and a return grill in the basement.

Is it normal to have a return grill in the basement?

The basement was semi-finished in the loosest sense and I'm wondering if the previous HO might have added the registers and return himself.

(I also figured out where the bathroom exhaust fan vents to.)

If you want heat down there,
like near the floor?
A return is a good idea.
Your basement floor is where
every bit of cold air in the house
is headed.

I'd prefer to not waste any heat down there. My office is down there but I'm a firm believer in sweaters.

Alot of the old house here The AC units are in the basement.

The basements are usually unfinished with a god awful bathroom from the 20's and a laundry room.

The ac has return on it down low and usually two vents in the basement one in the open area and one in the bathroom

Rory,

You'd have laughed and cried if you saw this "bathroom" that was down there.

I was going to photograph it but it really didn't deserve to be preserved for posterity.

The shower had 1/4" plywood nailed up with 1" finish nails over which was plastic 4x4 tiles . The floor of the shower was just concrete.

Its' almost as good as the "bathroom" on the second floor. I promise I'll take pictures of that one before I rip it out.
