Return Air

Sorry to bother you guys, I'm a crapenter

I just bought a home in the north...I have a forced air system with heat vents in the floor and return air near the ceiling. 40's ranch and all the ducting is original. I don't know much about hvac, but I've never seen return air placed so high.

I'm patching walls and preparing to paint, will moving the vent lower in the wall increase efficiency. The return uses the stud bay and is enclosed in the basement joist cavity. It would be no problem to cut a new lower hole and seal the upper. Is this necessary?

I have a new high efficiency Carrier furnace 1998, I'm not sure of the BTUs, but I'm heating around 1500 sq.ft.

Thanks WNY

Re: Return Air

would it make any difference if the poster had ac in addition to heat? Would it be just as good to reverse the supply and return locations: supply in ceiling and return at floor level?

Re: Return Air

It could be a natural draft air plenum. I would leave it alone it could be used to bring make-up air to the appliance if the basement is finished.
