Range Hood 60" Above Cooktop?

My cooktop is more or less on a penninsula. Actually there is a knee-wall wrapping around the back of the cabinets, and a header 8' off the floor above the knee wall as the wall is weight bearing. There is a raised bar that wraps around the back of the cabinets and I want unobstructed access to the people sitting at that bar. My wife hates the dramatic look of the chimney style range hoods and would prefer a downdraft vent. While I think the pop-up style downdrafts are pretty cool, they disrupt the gas burners and are ultimately inefficient when compared to an overhead vent.

I was hoping to compromise with a ceiling mount range hood that I could mount 60" above the cooktop. IOW, the bottom of the hood would be even with the bottom of the header over that knee-wall. I could then wrap the crown moulding around the hood and it wouldn't appear to be looming over the cooktop and getting in my way. I'm quite tall, and most hood manufacturers recommend the hood be mounted 30" above the cooktop. That is definitely in the way. Does anyone know of any hoods that can be mounted 5' above the cooktop? With a 36" gas cooktop, how many cfm will I likely be needing to pull at that height?

if you where set on that application, it probably could be done, but your not going to get off easy. you will need to design the system yourself. you will probably need a motor that is mounted outside the house(remote location) a good hvac guy would be able to do the calcs for you. with a 60'' draw, sound would be a concern. as you stated most companies do not recomend that distance.

Re: Range Hood 60" Above Cooktop?

At 60" it won't work, there is just to much air flow that keeps the smoke from rising straight up into the hood. When the range doesn't have a wall to back it up, 30" is tough. It takes very little air movement to disrupt the flow of the smoke.

Look at the hoods used in oriental restaurants that cook at the table. The hoods are huge compared to the cooking surface, they have really large exhaust fans, and they are no where near 60" above the table.

I have installed 100's of them and the best I highest I have installed was 3' above a 1500 cfm viking hood

I have installed a Jenn-air down draft gas cooktop and was very impressed with its venting.

Would that not work??

5 feet above and you're going to need a jet turbine to keep from cooking vapors from spilling out of the hood.

Why not just get a downdraft? Most range hoods are 36" max from the cooking surface.

Re: Range Hood 60" Above Cooktop?

Looks like the best option is probably to go with a downdraft vent. I'm looking now for models that raise 10" but I'd prefer not to pay >$1,000. The other thing is that it must be compatible with gas a cooktop. Any suggestions?

Why not get the stove with the down draft built in to it. Jenn-air among others sells a gas stove with that option.

If you are talking about the ones with the downdraft vent that is flush with the burners, they aren't an option because when compared to the telescopic ones they don't work very well. One that raises 10" positions itself far enough above the burners that it doesn't severely disrupt the gas flame. These are also high enough to do a pretty good job of pulling vapors and fumes from the tops of most pots/pans. The non-telescopic vents significantly disrupt the heat produced by the flames and do a relatively poor job of capturing fumes above pots.

On this one I used both the downdraft and the pop up. It was a small kitchen so they thought it would be a good idea to have both venting options

That's interesting. I hadn't considered mounting the pop-up in the raised bar. Much more functional that way. Not sure that I want it in the way of people seated there though. Have to give it some thought.

RBS,

Those pop up vents seem pretty far away from the ranges. How efficient are they at that distance?

Depends on the cfms. If its a nice unit with high cfms its not to bad. The pop ups are no where as effective as the hoods.

i think that would be cutting it a little too close
