Question
I heard of a person in our area that is burning diesel fuel in there home fuel oil furnace. I tried to google about any problems this would cause, didn't really come up with anything, then it came to me to ask the pros. I've never heard of it before, I was just wondering.
Thanks alot |

Re: Question
#2 home heating oil and #2 diesel are basically the same. But home heating oil does not have to meet the low sulfur requirements that on-road diesel does.
Also they are usually dyed different so they can see if it is road tax paid fuel, red for home oil and blue or no dye for diesel. And of course diesel is more expensive because of the road taxes added. Many years ago I remodeled a old 1920's house that had a oil furnace. I was planning on replacing it but used it for awhile since I lived in it while remodeling. One cold winter day I ran out of oil, so ran down the road and bought some diesel to get by for a few days. and a few days later I replaced the oil furnace with a heat pump. |

Re: Question
You will want to know which diesel fuel it is that is being burned, as that gives an idea to a fuel oil burner tech as to how to set the burner. In many areas, diesel fuel is the same as #2 fuel oil, some diesel fuel is #2 fuel oil with coloration, other grades of diesel will be a different 'weight' with or without winterization additives. Changing or mixing without caring about the viscosity can increase the possibility of a dangerous 'bad burn.'
