Outside Roof Furnace Noise/hot

This house was purchased and it has no basement, just a crawlspace. The previous homeowner was apparantly an HVAC guy and used a rooftop furnace but placed it beside the house and hooked it up. There is some venting under the house that the vents are blocked because hardwood floor was put in the house and installed over some vents that we never opened. The house has been like this now for about a year and a half. The furnace last year was really loud when on and now today its smelling like burnt dust in the house. When her husband went to check it, it was crazy hot under the house and the vent leading to the house was too hot to touch. He lifted the top off the furnace and a big gust of HOT heat came up (after furnace had been off for 20 minutes).
Whats up with the furnace? Is it gonna blow up or anything catch fire? Is that possible?
