Oklahoma HVAC
I recently visited my sister in Ok. and visited several new homes and construction sites. On my visit i noticed that most every home regardless on square footage had more than one furnace. Can an HVAC contractor shed some light on why this is this way. I am in the Northwest and live in a 3700 square foot home with one furnace which causes me great curiosity. Thank you in advance for the education.

Re: Oklahoma HVAC
Well first are we talking about a one or two story home. Using one system for the upstairs and downstairs if virtually impossible to maintain a desirable temperature. Secondly, speaking for myself I perform load calculations on every home I install equipment in. Finally when designing a system the weather here leans more towards more cooling days then heating days versus the northwest would fall more on heating days than cooling days. It all comes down to the design conditions in your geographical area. I hope that gives you some insight.

Re: Oklahoma HVAC
We work in Texas and it is common for 4,000+ square feet and up houses to have 3 or more HVAC units in them to be able to keep up with the heat in the summer and two have better temperature balance between the 1st and 2nd floor.

Re: Oklahoma HVAC
Personal opinion (at least here in Mi) anything over 2500 sq ft MUST be a double furnace configuration.
I have seen 3200 sq ft homes with one 200kbtu 70% Arcoaire furnace. Friggin nightmare for air flow. Aaaarrggghh!!!

Its all about a cheaper install, smaller duct work and zoning.
