Oil Furnance Stack

The stack on my parents furnace is cracking where it meets the chimney. Please forgive me if I am wrong on terms. They have had 2 seperate contractors out over the past 3 years or so and the last one bragged about how he knows how to do this right and it will never fail, yet it has been less than a year and the sealant is cracking. What is the correct way of fixing this?

Re: Oil Furnance Stack

Why not run new piping inside of the chimney? re-pipe the whole thing. I suspect the flue/chimney may be oversized, and the cracking is due to condensation.

not to correct a fella with terms, but, I think one spells nows with a K...

I forgot to add I can not type either. I usually go back and find all those silly mistakes.

I am not sure why not. I am not a HVAC guy, but will look into it.

Re: Oil Furnance Stack

The cement should have been refractory cement. The stack you are referrring to is a connector going into a thimble. If you have changed your furnance to a higher efficency from what you once had more condensation can be present and erode the clay liner. If there is a clean out open it up, if there is clay debris from the flue you will need a new liner insert.

You need a Level II inspection and a listed chimney liner.
