They are not a wear item. Your Carlin part number is for an ignition transformer. The "test" them is to short the terminals with an insulated handle screwdriver, keep the screwdriver touching one terminal and "lift" the spark from the other terminal. If you can lift the spark at least 3/4", the transormer is fine. The output is aroudn 15,000 volts, so use your head, or you'll never forget that shock.
If your unit is still smoking, I'd suspect the air shutter vibrated out of position or something related to the air flow. What's your CO % from the Bacharrach test? How does your nozzle GPM compare to the one you replaced and the one on the unit's dataplate?
Was that a soft pack combustion chamber? If so, and it was oil soaked, it will smoke for a good while.
