New Gas Meter

I just got a notice from the gas company that they need to change my outside gas meter. My house is only 12 years old yet they claim that we were randomly selected along with many others in the neighborhood. There's no charge but we have have to book an appt. so that they can relight all the gas appliances in the house. No big deal, but the first thing that came to my mind was could the meter have been defective, resulting in our bill being too high

Or, maybe the old one was running slow, and now your bill will be higher?
