Metal ducts or Flexible duct in use?

I do have a question: what I need to use flexible duct or metal duct ? the furnace is located in the basement included garage (San Francisco area).

you list yourself as an A/C contractor and you ask a question like this?

I think I would be checking with the local building department to see what they require.
