Maybe it's a good time to upgrade furnace

A friend of mine smelled gas outside her house and called the gas company. They came to repair it and while they were in the basement to shut off the furnace they red flagged it. It seems that the exhaust vent changes to a "c" vent as it runs horizontally through the bathroom right next to the furnace room. It's too close to combustible materials (drywall and wood) and needs to be changed to "B" vent. They have 45 days to make the repairs. This was obviously a DIY basement project done by a previous owner. The pipe is actually painted in the bathroom
My question is...How hot can this actually get? The paint isn't burnt off, the drywall and 2x4"s are fine. The furnace is a mid efficiency unit around 12 years old.

comeing right from the furnace it can burn you good. the larger the furnace the hotter it can get. And if the furnace ran non stop because of a malfunction very very hot. would it actully burn materials ? keeping required clearances will make sure nothing could happen.

Code is 6inches to combustables for c vent and 1 inch for b vent.If something were to happen your insurance would blow u off.Regardless in 10 yrs when the unit needs changed if u don't go hi-eff. u already have the b-vent there. good luck
