Inter-lock For Type On Hood

I am wondering how many of you are inter-locking the exshaust from a type one hood to the cooking equpment? If you are how is it working ?

The resone for my question is, in the 2006 international mechanical code section 507.2.1.1 ( type 1 hood system shall be designed and installed to automatically activate the exhaust fan whenever cooking operations occur. The activation of the exhausr fan shall occur through an inter-lock with the cooking appliances, by means of heat sensors or by means of other approved methods.) I have a restraunt that is trying to make this happen and because it is new to them and me we are having trouble making it work.

Any help would be great.

Thanks
Justin

Re: Inter-lock For Type On Hood

One of two ways. Either with a shunt trip main breaker for the "under hood equipment" subpanel, or by de-energizing a contactor that does the under hood equipment. Use the end switch on the ANSUL system for control power switching.

This isn't normally something the HVAC man fusses with. Typically this is the electrician's job.

Be advised that you also have to shut down the make up air, and turn on the exhaust fan by automatic means.

You might also have to trigger the building's fire alarm system as well.

Re: Inter-lock For Type On Hood

thanks for the reply. looking at your post I see how that would work. My question is will it have the exsaust fan on 24-7? What we have come up with is to have them put in a motion dectector in at the hood so if sombody comes in to cook the hood will turn on.

Thanks
Justin

Re: Inter-lock For Type On Hood

if he can wire in a motion detector to make the switch, why couldn't he wire in a standard refrigeration thermostat. I know i've seen some that can be adjusted up to 100 degrees f. so I imagine that they are avaliable in the range needed for your application.

it seems that your local code is asking for a heat activated, approved switch. these tstats should work, granted that the amp draw of the exhaust motor doesn't exceed the rating on the tstat. they also come with long cap tubes allowing you to put the sensing bulb where needed.
