Insulation???

Hello all

I have an old 1905 house with actual 2"x4" studs. R-13 insulation batts, if I am correct are for todays 2x4's which are 3-1/2" deep. How important is the 1/2" space that I will have when I install the batts. Should it be on the siding side, or the interior side, or does it make a difference? Should I use something else with it.

Just want to be right.

Thanks ahead of time

Re: Insulation???

if you mean the kraft paper it should face in. ifyou are are going to insulate the rafters in the roof then the gap is very important and should be maintained use the stirofoam vents at the eves to keep air flow to the back of roof also install a ridge vent. if your attic is not finished go with attic blanket and roof or gabel vents. if you mean the 1/2 inch gap onthe wall insul. you can just staple the kraft to the sides of the studs instead of the front drywallers prefer this anyway ie. gap on inside

Re: Insulation???

Dig out some spare change and pay to have someone come in and spray foam. Fiberglass is just about done IMHO. Foam eliminates a whole lot of headaches and you'll get more insulating value into your limited space.

But to answer your question, It doesn't matter where the gap is. If you must use fiberglass, don't use kraft faced, and cover it all with a vapor barrier when you're done, taped and caulked.

Re: Insulation???

It's not a very effective vapor barrier, so why bother? Skip it and just put up poly. I don't know where you could even use just Kraft anymore. You can't in MN, energy code.

But like I said, sprayed in foam is your best bet. It's not as expensive as it used to be, get a couple quotes.

Plus, you won't get all itchy
