HVAC Question

Hi,

As an HVAC novice I need some help...

In my own home I have a 2 Ton unit used for about 1200 sq ft. This unit is a heat pump(Goodman).
Most of the equipment is installed in the attic space and the vents are installed in the ceilings ( 2 per room).
What I noticed is that on hot humid days the unit is working to keep up. The thermostat is set to 72 degrees but the internal house temp is more like 76.
Will attic ventilation fans help enough to help the unit or do I need to speak the contractor about a different unit?

Thanks for any advice or help ...

Re: HVAC Question

Call me at my office and one of my service techs can answer your question. It sounds like your ducts are not ptoperly sealed or it could be that your unit is too small. My guys can walk you through that. Tom Durbin A/C - 972-203-6068-ask for me Lauren.

Re: HVAC Question

Maybe a 2 ton unit is oversized for a 1200 sq ft house. All your cooling unit is ,is a big de humidifier. The unit may come on with a blast of cool air to satisfy the stat.but u want it to cycle proberly to pull humidity out off house.Oversized a/c is sometimes worse than undersized.....just a thought....

Re: HVAC Question

How long have you had the unit? You could simply have a small freon leak some where, if you are a little low on freon it will not keep up, do you change your filters every 30-60 days, do you use ceiling fans, keep doors open, lots of things to consider, if you are still in warranty call the HVAC Contractor to come out and walk the home with you and fix teh issues.

Re: HVAC Question

how many vents are in the home and what size - for every 4 vents on a 6 run it counts as 1 ton - you should have 8 vents in your home. Do you have dampers in the duct system and are they adjusted, this can help some.

Re: HVAC Question

Does the unit seem to cycle a lot ?

Do you get a steady flow of water though the drain on humid days ?

How does it run on less humid days ?

Has the condenser been cleaned recently ?

What climate are you in ?

Re: HVAC Question

On a humid day your air condition must use more energy to condensation the humidity in the air in turn using less energy for heat extraction. Also being a heat pump system it may be a little on the shy side at 2 tons. What is the SEER rating on your unit? How does it perform in heat pump mode? What is your back up source of heat? In air condition mode the return air registers become more important then the supply side, if the heat can not find its way the coil then you can not extract it. During the day keep your windows and blinds closed and BBQ outside for supper, any heat produce in your home will add to the work of your unit.
