Hvac Guys Is There A Difference

Is there a big difference in unit size such as 2.0 2.5 and 3.0 ton units ....

Does a half ton make that big of a difference????

I was recently told that the rule of thumb is a ton will take care of approx. 600 sq. ft. I'm not sure maybe someone will agree or disagree.

Not a good idea to use rule of thumb...whos thumb? There are way to many variables to use a rule of thumb..what part of the country do you live in? How hot is it what are your "degree days", do you have single, double, triple windows? How many windows do you have? How much insulation do you have, how many doors? Is you house sealed well or do you have a lot of leaks in the windows or doors and there are many more. Have a HVAC manual J. Have I said enough? What is your return aiar size, what is you air flow rate, etc, etc. The rule is...there is no rule. Good luck!

I'll take this as a disagreement. I do agree with you there are many variables. I did say approx. And I'll admit when the hvac guy told me that I suppose he was thinking our area.

You need a LOCAL pro. Personally, I went a little larger in tonnage as the old unit for one side of the house was running all of the time. 3 hurricanes later, everything has changed and the larger unit runs a shorter time. I'm told that this is not efficient with today's units.

I've been told something similiar. Bigger is not always better. "Short cycling" causes more problems with condensation and mold. An oversize unit doesn't run long enough to keep the ducting dried out. But I'm no HVAC guy, so I might be all arsed up. Just what I've been told. also we live in a very humid area (eastern NC) so that no doubt plays a huge part in the calculations.

Good HVAC guys, those who really know and understand all the variables and take the time to do the math correctly are sometimes hard to find, and those who do are worth every penny you pay for them in the long run.

Heating cooling costs are one of the major costs of operating a household in these parts and an efficiently designed and functioning system is an good investment.

Re: Hvac Guys Is There A Difference

Heres the deal,,,,
I went from 2.0 to 2.5 beacuse of not enough cold air...An I still don't fell as though I am getting enough...
My local Pro stated based on all his math, and calc, and experience this is what I needed for 1200 sq.
With 10 windows and gabriel vents although the home is cooler to me I was looking for 68 or so..
Maybe i just dream

68 Degrees? That's pretty low! I wouldn't want to pay that bill!
