Re: How To Get Certified?

Most of your community colleges and technical schools have a night class you can take for a few weeks that basically teaches you the test. You show up on the appointed day and take the test and pass. You cert card arrives in the mail a few weeks later. Cost me about 300 bucks for the class and test years back.

Posession of the certification by no means makes you a troubleshooter or even says that you can fix your way out of a wet paper bag. All the certification says is that you are famaliar with the laws that prevail and you are trained so as to not release refrigerant into the atmosphere. As a side benefit, it permits you to buy refrigerant.

Be careful where you walk, with this issue. If you read the fine print, as I understand it, you will need to have or work for someone who has the proper recovery equipment etc. That's expensive! In addition, when you get into the loop of working with refrigerants, make sure you keep the documentation up. You need to keep track of units worked on and all the refrigerant, both purchase and use. By this time you will have refrigerant scales and a couple of thousands spent. The bottom line is, you as the technician and no one else is responsible for this myrid of compliance issues. In Michigan, even with an EPA certification, you would need the state license before you can actually do the work. Property maintenance companys are the worst, for thinking they can skate around these requirements. Tread lightly and good luck!

Depending on where you live check out your local apartment associations.
There are lots of classes. Cheaper if you are a memeber. I hope this helps.

Make sure that after you become licensed. You don't just simply fill your units with freon when they're low, but take the time to learn how to troubleshoot a leak and learn how fill the units to thier proper pressures.

Replacing compressors will be a lot more expensive than a service call from the local heating co.

Re: How To Get Certified?

i dont know why they even want me certified , all i do is tell them it dont work if it is something simple i fix it (i worked for a/c guy years ago so know the basics) if it needs charged or big repairs they call someone. they said they will pay for it because i dont do enough work for them to make it worth my while to pay for it.
