HELP! Question About A Replacement

I use these forums alot for the painters forums. Am so glad this is a part of the same forums!

Anyways, I have a little problem. It is, as you already know, Dec. 18th. I am in Cleveland, OH. Temp outside is...well damn cold.
My heater just stopped working. Its a Goodman Mfg. Model GMP075 (now Janitrol?)
Well, After messing with it for a lil bit (which i must say scares the chit outta me cause i know nothing about these things) and figured out by the LED blinks on the pcb that it is a bad ignition.

My questions are:
Should i get the ignition and replace it myself, or pay a heating guy?
Can i even GET one of these? Where?

Due to my reading online a little about this model, i am concerned about safety. Should i even bother with a ignition?
If i were to go out tomorrow (which i very well may have to do) to buy a furnace, could i instal it myself or would that not be reccomended?

Re: HELP! Question About A Replacement

Not knowing your technical capabilities, I couldn't tell you if you if you can or cannot replace your ignition module. I would venture to say if it scares you to mess with it, you might be better off paying to have it done. I will say though, you might try cleaning the flame sensor first to see if that corrects your problem. It is the long (normally silver) rod that sticks up usually at the end of the row of burners and will have a single wire running to it. Clean it with fine steel wool and see if that corrects your issue.

To address the concern of safety, yes it is true there have been issues linked with those furnaces. BUT, in all fairness, those issues have many times been caused due to an improper installation. Before I picked up the Amana line, my company has installed several hundered of Goodmans (used to be Janitrol BTW) furnaces and have not had heat exchanger issues with any of ours. We have however, found issues with that line installed by fly by night or low ball "hack" type companys. If you are concerned with your furnaces safety and fitness for duty, again i would recommend a pro to inspect. And that being said, I would have to go again with having a reliable contractor size and install a new furnace for you if you end up needing one.
