Heat Pump Questions
I started a thread on heater inspection, wanted more info on a heat pump.
One HVAC contractor told me we were too cold for a heat pump. Here are our temps. Is it only because it uses more electricity or it does not run efficient? Natural gas is not an option, propane is too expensive. I have another contractor coming Tuesday and trying to learn a little more. I have a single wide mobile that is well insulated and has double pane windows. I have a pellet stove I use to do most of heating. I want to replace my 20 year old electric furnace with a split system (heat and air). Thanks for all your help! |

Re: Heat Pump Questions
It's too cold at some points for an air to air heat pump to work without back up heat (electric racks) but, it looks like a good install just the same. When it's below 38-40 the dx should shut down and the electric would take over, usually with an outdoor thermostat inside the outdoor unit. Cheaper to run than just resistance heat racks. Maybe look at a manufacturers site and search for a local contractor on the site. Or call a local a/c heating supply house and ask them to recommend a contractor.

Re: Heat Pump Questions
ok, did a little research, still have a guy coming tommorrow.
Should I expect him to do a "Manual J"? What are your thoughts on the demand/defrost cycle option? Cold climate pump vs All climate pump? Still getting different opinions on whether it is too cold or not? Thanks |

Re: Heat Pump Questions
I installed a York air-to-air heat pump 3 years back in my house. My unit will heat my 1963 rambler (lots of air leaks) down to 15 degrees F at that point there is a electric plenum heater that assists the heat pump down til 5 degrees F. If it is below 5 degrees the plenum heater does all the work.

Re: Heat Pump Questions
Got a quote today. We talked about the best option. I think this is it.
Lennox 2.5 ton downdraft fan coil with 15kw heatstrips to replace old unit. Lenox 2.5 ton air handler 15kw heat strips, Lennox 13 seer straight cool condensor installed on pad, freon lines run, low voltage wiring and prog thermostat. What else should I know/ask? Thanks |
