Heat Exchanger Problem With Hayward Pool Heater
I have been through two heat exchangers on a New Hayward H100ID1 Pool Heater (Installed in June 2006) in less than 2yrs. The heat exchangers to me appear to be defective from the factory. The two I have been through lasted less than one season of use each. It took me forever to determine the original problem. I thought I just had a leak on one of my piping connections but it was actually the heat exchanger leaking. I had gas co. techs and a pool heater tech come out. Apparently the leak sprayed directly on the burner and would extinguish the flame and keep the gas from igniting as it should. As the heater would try to light, gas would build up in the casing until it finally found the spark and BOOM it would ignite. The service people kept trying to find spark or gas pres. problems when all along it was a defective heat exchanger. Hayward furnished me with a replacement heat exchanger which I installed in April of 2007. Yesterday I noticed water on the pad below my heater and the same problem has begun all over again. What I want to know is, has anyone had or run into a problem with hayward heat exchangers going out prematurely?

Re: Heat Exchanger Problem With Hayward Pool Heater
What's the pool chemicals look like? I doubt two would go out that quickly....maybe one but not two although anything is possible. My guess is the chemicals aren't being kept appropriately causing the water to be acidic and eating through the exchanger.

Re: Heat Exchanger Problem With Hayward Pool Heater
ditto that..... a heat exchanger can be trshd in a matter of weeks...
I'm guessing 1. rock bottom ph 2. zero alkalinty 3. chlorine in the skimmer & not running pump 24/7..... ray btw.... I bet h20 is crystal clear... common mistake , algae won't bloom in an acid pit & copper is an algaecide. the elemental copper that used to be in the heat exchangee is now in the pool. when you get around to balancing the H20 , don't be surprised to find "blue dust" throughout the pool. the dust is your hrat exchanger.
