Re: Is This A Good System Please Help

Goodman have really turned things around over the last few years, I know nothing of furnaces, (I live in Florida). It all comes down to Ford,Dodge or Chevy as far as most a/c units go, if you get a good warranty and you feel good about your contractor then go for it.

I am partial to RUUD/ RHEEM a/c units for residential very competetive prices and the last one was in my house for 13 years, with nothing but a new contactor in that time. So I replaced it with another RHEEM, a higher seer this time though.

I do hope you got more than one quote , and were given the option on other units, do your homework and get at least 3 quotes the more information you can gather the more educated decision you can make.

Ok Matt I am a Trane dealer so may be partial. Goodman is known to the reputable HVAC companies here as "Contractor Grade". A Goodman has good warranties but lack sturdiness. After a few years we find them very noisy (which by the way is rarely covered). If you go on Consumer reports.com it actually says that Contractors (Such as myself) frown on these systems. Now do not get me wrong I have installed Goodman but usually in a realtor sale situation or rental property. Good Luck.

hmmm Ive been selling GOODMAN for yrs....never have had a problem, same scroll compressor as a trane. you buy a 14 seer it has a limited LIFE time warrenty on compressor no other unit has this including TRANE.I also put in Kenmore for Sears. would never sell one of these systems to my customers. to many problems with them ,and they are made by carrier.....Id sell GOODMAN to anyone..I suggest reading the brochures they have come a long way in past yrs...All units are made the same, Your are just buying the Name these days.SAME componets inside....any unit is subjected to weather conditions that can cause problems... but if you look around new houses .,apartments ALL are using GOODMAN......This I know from experience. I order a part for Goodman (which Is seldom)they have it to me that day... I order part from TRANE. it takes a few days to get...... 75% of my business is Goodman.I Stand behind them....

Go thru consumer report, they have a history of failures for all brands. Goodman is at the bottom. This is the Pinto of Air conditioning.

Goodman equipment is very basic with no extras, it's made cheap. Most of the leak repairs on new units I have made are on Goodman condenser coils. I would go with a better name; Lennox, Luxaire, Ruud, Trane, etc

Hmmmm Goodman puts a LIfetime warrenty on there 14 seers ,I dont see any other doing that, LENNOX<TRANE< CARRIER... they all stop at 15 yrs, it comes with 10yr you have to buy the 5 yr option, Goodman has lifetime compressor warrenty, and 10 yr parts.... anyway Never have had a problem with goodman, most problems, are weather, where is it located, do you get more sun on that side of home, is water puring in from gutters etc....maybe Im just lucky and getting the good ones?? who knows...my opinion is Customer is always right, if they want a goodman, trane, carrier etc. I just install....later...

It tickles me that you list Luxaire in there with those other brands. Lux is about as builder grade as Goodman is. The low-line of York.

I don't have any problems with Goodman. They're certainly easy enough to work on.

One of the reason why you'll find so many threads online about builder grade units like Goodman and Armstrong is because these are the brands that are typically installed in cheaper homes. Cheaper homes often equate to homeowners who don't necessarily have the cash to hire a repair man, and who will try to ask questions online to repair the system themself.

I can honestly say that I find all brands to fail by some means or another with equal regularlity.

Re: Is This A Good System Please Help

Well MD in my area Johnstone Supply is very popular and they are the local Lux dealer, so a lot of it tends to go in and for the money I'll take it over Goodman any day. I haven't had to change a Lux condenser coil, or braze up a tube sheet on a unit that isn't a couple of months old yet. And as far as I know Goodman is the only condensing unit that has a note to say that oil in the bottom of the unit is normal.

My feelings towards what makes a good brand is the amount of time I have to spend repairing them and how easy or difficult the repairs are.

As far as a guarantee goes, it doesn't matter to me if a part is under warranty or not when I am changing it. I'd rather install a system and just come back for maintenance.

Im the rheem guy. Very reliable ,quiet, low profile condensers.good priceing. Get a few more prices. all tho your price is good even with a rheem. I would want more then one return if its gonna be basement duct to keep the system noise down. If in the attic duct then one return will work properly sized.

What area do you live in? Any new house for $300,000 sounds really reasonable, I just can't believe they come with a/c too....
