Geothermal Estimate-Need Insight

I am designing a 5000 square foot house (2 floors + basement) here in Maryland and have received an estimate for a geothermal system. It appears high to me but is the first time looking into installing one. Need some insight guys...

Install WaterFurnace Envision Series 4 ton dual speed compressor and variable speed air handler package unit to serve basement and first floor.

Install WaterFurnace Envision Series 3 ton dual speed compressor and variable speed air handler package unit to serve 2nd floor.

Fabricate and install all duct work

Estimate $54,577 (Does not include estimate of $21,000 for drilling earth loop)

Roughly accurate or run for it?

It's a really good price actually. Just make sure of the company's credentials. Try to phone three of their past customers to see how everything went then and is working now.

Gentlemen, I thought we didn't do the price thing here?
Without knowing all the specifics of any install, giving or validating prices is unprofessional at best.

Just for giggles. If the cost is 54 grand plus another 21 for excavation, bringing the grand total up around the 75K mark, as compared to more traditional heat and ac plants, what do you suppose the cost payback ends up being? I think we would be looking at making up about 50 g's in installation difference, then we have to figure the operation and efficiency differences on top of that. I have a gut feeling that it will take a very long time indeed to even the equation out. Then again, geographic location plays a big role as do the habits of the occupants.

In our area things work out a lot better than that. We can install a geo system in a house for $25000. It will heat the house for less than $500 per year. The people had been using propane for heat and paid $5300 last year.

The owner gets $4500 in credits and rebates so payback is 4 -5 years. With propane costs ever on the rise, who wouldn't sign up for geo.

Wink

Hello again Rizzo, Just talked to My Son in Law. Price is a little lower than He would charge. He is guessing 6 wells to 300 ft.If You have the room ,horizontal trenches will save a lot of $$$$$$$. He said about 10 years on the pay back.
He has a good size Geo Buss. and knows what He's talking about.
Some Guys on here walk around with a large bag of SOUR GRAPES !
But they are entertaining, if nothing else! Drift

The tax incentives certainly bring the numbers into a more managable range. We have installed a few geo systems in the past few years but all the customers were high end people if you know what I mean. Not that there's anything wrong with being rich
I don't see them catching on for the average home owner, nor are they practical in the city. If I was building a new house I would probably go that route as the cost can be wrapped up in the construction and you can catch a break on the excavation if the contractor is already on site anyway.
