For 2 units to have the same problem it seems like you may have a gas supply problem. Call your supplier and have him check the meter and regulator.

Your gas dryer and range will normally work okay, even when the gas VOLUME is low. It's a volume issue, and not a pressure issue. This happens during periods of severe high demand, or when there's a bad underground leak. Only a technician with a manometer would be able to say for sure if it's a supply side issue, but with 2 neighbors with the same problem, it sure sounds like it. I'd give the gas company a jingle.

{You don't have a large central LP supply for your neighborhood do you? ...that could be nearly empty?}

It's a gas pressure problem in the main. Happened to me once. While I was attempting to take the manifold gas pressure reading the the gas company knocked on the door. They didn't get the pressure boosted for winter quick enough and it was happening in different parts of town. When the main burners light the pressure will drop low enough to cause the unit to shut down on loss of flame single. For older units it will rob the standing pilot and the thermalcouple cools to the point the unit shuts down.

If both homes are new and piped by the same contractor it could be a problem inside the home. If the unit shuts off when the water heater fires or the water heater can't fire when the furnace is running.
