Gas Dryer Venting

Lady wants her "spice kitchen" turned into a laundry room. So we ripped out the gas range and hood fan and putting in a stacking washer and dryer.

Can I vent the dryer out the old hood fan vent with a reducer? It goes out to the side of the house.

Or should I just go straight out the side with the flex stuff?

The smooth wall pipe is better than the flex and if it goes right outside its okay but.............the grease residue will be a magnet for lint collection and fire hazard.

Good point. I couldn't think of any reason not to do it that way other than I've never done it before.

I was thinking the opportunity to potentially save some work may cloud my judgement and thought I'd get something good out of a post on here (and a reason why I probably shouldn't do it)

I'm no ventilation guy, but that looks larger than 4" pipe. I would think tieing in would decrease air velocity at the termination point and may have some adverse effect, especially venting up, it may not expel the moisture properly.

Just a thought.

Wait a sec - does it vent out on the roof? If so I would say no go, check your codes

If it is a quick 90 outside I would reline it or replace it. Cleaning it would be a PITA & will probably cost the HO more in labor than the material costs

It is 6".
Hmmm... seems plausible that the moisture wouldn't get expelled properly if you think about it that way...

I agree, I definitely don't want to clean it. I would never be sure that I cleaned it well enough or properly anyway.

I'm leaning towards just venting straight out the side. Quick and easy and it beats cleaning or patching drywall.

This was supposed to be a quick job throwing in the washer and dryer and retiling the bathroom shower downstairs with densshield and kerdi behind, but they keep adding stuff downstairs and it's screwing up my schedule. We've put in a new tub with jets now, and retiling the whole bathroom, and swapped out the fan... The best part is that every morning we get there they have new stuff they want done. Which screws up the schedule even more because we have no time to prepare...

Re: Gas Dryer Venting

At a glance I thought it might be 6 inches, if so that would not work. I said clean because it sounded like it was a short run that you could easily feel. How about inserting a 4" duct inside the 6"?

Dryer lint will not lift that high. Seen it before and the results were a disaster.
Short and Straight out the side is best.

Could probably be done but would be a pain dinking around. it is fairly short, but I can't reach all the way out. The wall behind where the dryer currently sits is the exterior wall.

Re: Gas Dryer Venting

Mine was built to exhaust straight up through the roof, pain in the ass, every six months take the thing apart and clean out all the lint.

Most dryers are good for a maximum of 35' of pipe. Every 90 elbow counts as 5' if I remember correctly.

Run it straight out the side. Put a ceiling fan in where the current hole is and replace the pipe to 3 or 4" as needed.

No Drywall repair and an easy added sale for you.

This is one case where I don't want any added sales!

I think I'd rather just put a grill over it and no fan

This was supposed to be a 2 day job and we're going on Day 4 with all the extras they keep adding. I was just using it to fill a 1-2 day lull and make these guys happy. They have a large job coming up soon and I should be #1 on their list.

Besides this we are in the middle of a full bathroom remodel (even though it's a small area) and we're in the last week of the Fitness Club we're doing. I WANT THIS JOB FINISHED
