Furnace Cycling Too Quickly?

I had a Goodman 93% furnace installed and it seems that it comes on every 15 min and runs for about 5 min heating the house. Winter is approaching and it will get much colder and wondering what will happen then? The house is an older home with non thermal windows. The thermostat is a Honeywell digital in the same place as before. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: Furnace Cycling Too Quickly?

It's not real cold yet, and your furnace might be a tad oversized.

A properly sized furnace will run almost non-stop on the coldest design day of the year. During more temperate times, it might only have to run for a few minutes to take the chill off.

Are your storm windows down yet and such? You might be letting the "cold in" places that you havn't thought about yet this season, thus your house is cooling back off every 15 minutes.

In fairness, you might have a service issue, but it's a little early to say for sure.

In comparison to my old furnace it ran longer about 10 min every half hour or so. Could a faulty thermostat cause this problem? What kind of service issue would I be looking for?

That would make perfect sense. Your old furnace would have been less efficient. It would have to run longer to get the same net amount of heat into the house.

Yes, it could, but don't jump on that bandwagon yet. People always think the thermostat is to blame, no matter what's wrong with the furnace.

Anything, really. I was thinking along the lines of a safety like a rollout or pressure switch shutting it down. Way too early to say. I honestly don't think you have a problem. Your system is highly diagnostic, and it will shut down and flash error codes if a real issue exists. I think it's just early in the season and it doesn't have to run long to warm things up.

I am not a furnace guy, but I have a question I think will shed some light. Watch the thermostat Is the furnace kicking on when the temp drops to the set point and kicking off when it reaches the desired temp? This will tell you if the furnace is working correctly.
