Foil tape question from a carpenter...

Help a wood chipper out, please.

Can I use UL-723 ("rated for flame spread and smoke development") tape in place of UL-181-AP foil tape to wrap the seams in the venting for a pellet stove (this is in my own home)?

Thanks.

If its rated for flame spread and development, it probably would be ok, but can't you get info from the manufacturer to find out what they reccomend? You can't go wrong by their way.

I believe the main difference is the fire rating, I think the 181 has a resistance of around 30 mins and 723 is not as superior (contact manufacture for verification). I don't see any problem using the 723 in its places since you are just venting, I assume.

Thanks, guys. I also assume that the UL 723 is sufficient, but I ran out to get a roll of the UL 181 last night. Why tempt the inspector?

Thanks again.

Doc, what's the difference between the a & b? Is the 'b' o.k. for taping reflective insulation?

Thanks.

Exclamation

Foil tape listed to UL 181 A-P is designed and tested for sealing duct board. 181-B-FX tape is designed for flexible duct transitions. The 181 listing includes the UL 723, which is also the ASTM E-84/ NFPA 255 Steiner Tunnel test for flame spread. For instance, type X drywall rated at a flame spread of '15' propagates a flame front 15% as fast as red oak in the tunnel test. But it still burns, therefore it is considered 'combustible' by code stds.

You do not wrap pellet vent with tin tape. You seal the joints with red RTV per the listing.
