Fire cleanup
Checked out a Trane furnace TUC60C936 that is in a 2 yr. old house that had a fire in the furnace room area. The furnace wasnt on fire but it started to run while the fire was going and carried soot and smoke to the rest of the house. Fortunately for them there was a pex water line above the fire that burst when the fire really got going and put out the flames. The home suffered mostly smoke damage as did the furnace. There was water sprayed on the furnace as well. Its a really oily smoke that is hard to wash off my hands. There was some Rubbermaid bins involved and some fabric softener bottles. Wiring looked ok inside. I cleaned the blower cage with soap and water but the motor looks coated inside. I believe it should be replaced as should the draft inducer motor. The pressure switch and all the safeties too. Cleaning the heat exchanger will be a challenge. Im guessing a steam cleaning. Got to clean the plenum and acoil too. The insurance co. wants a cost comparison to repair or replace the unit. I wonder if the furnace will ever be right again. The cleanup wont be cheap. Im afraid the smoke smell will never leave. Are there any products out there that we can use to help clean the furnace? This is my first fire call and I want to get it right. If it was my place, Id insist on a new furnace but the ins. co. has to be convinced. Thanks.
