Dryer/HVAC Venting

Can a dryer vent be tied into a 6" vent pipe that vents a furnace? I'm very skeptical, but thought I'd ask. I'm doing a proposal for a basement remodel, and it's a bit of a difficult spot for the dryer venting.

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin
Just think about that.
How many ways could it be wrong?

One good way to test this idea is to try it out in mid winter with both dryer & furnace going overnight.
If the family dies in their sleep, then no, it won't work.

You need to get a licensed professional there ASAP.

Re: Dryer/HVAC Venting

Could someone explain to me why it's so common for "experts" on this site to be rude, sarcastic and demeaning in their replies? A simple "no" would suffice. An explanation of the principles behind the answer would be even better! I am clearly not an HVAC expert, or I wouldn't have asked this question. I'm a younger general renovation contractor who would never dream of installing HVAC equipment. I would, however, dream of installing a bathroom vent, and in this case I was trying to think outside the box since a normal vent installation is nearly impossible.

These types of ignorant replies that mock others for asking a questions outside their areas of expertise will tend to cause people to not bother getting advice. What exactly is this site for if not for seeking advice?

A little civility would be appreciated. Here's an example of an appropriate answer:

"No, you can't do that. An HVAC expert might be able to give you some alternative suggestions for venting if you're running into difficulties."

Civil. To the point. Helpful. Not ignorant.

I didn't ask for perfection; I asked for civility. Perhaps a better term for it is maturity. The act of building oneself up by putting another down is what I'd expect not what I'd expect from civil adults. Unfortunately the internet as a medium has the tendency to cause some to lose their manners due to the perceived anonymity. Things are said online that would never be considered face-to-face.

I gave you too much credit.

Do you think that yours was
a mature response to a suggestion
that you merely think?

One is better off not thinking
"outside the box" when it comes to
carbon monoxide in the home.

Search the International Fuel Gas Code 2006 edition. This should help give you the answers you need, for venting gas appliances.

Yes, I do. Exactly what about my comment wasn't "thinking?" I came across a tricky situation in venting a dryer, and:

1) Thought of a possible solution.
2) Doubted it was a viable one.
3) Asked the "experts" to get confirmation.
4) Waited to proceed until I got the "experts" advice.

If I wasn't thinking, I would have just done it.

Neolitic....please don't bother replying to my posts in the future. I'll be happy to wait for others. This isn't the first time you've given an asinine remark to one of my questions. Thanks!

Thanks Verbal. Would that information be in the IRC 2006 as well? I have that on my computer. Since it was obviously a non-standard suggestion I figured it wouldn't be in my code book.

Like I said, gave you too much credit.
I thought that any intelligent person,
with a little thought, would be able
to conclude that there might
be safety issues with your proposed solution.

My original post said:

"Can a dryer vent be tied into a 6" vent pipe that vents a furnace? I'm very skeptical, but thought I'd ask."

I'd think that any intelligent person, with a little thought, would be able to conclude that means I DID suspect there MIGHT be safety issues with my proposed solution.

Thanks for all your help. Don't offer it again.

Re: Dryer/HVAC Venting
