Draft Regulator

Is it normal to not have a draft regulator on the pipe from a hot air furnace to the flue on the chimney? Doing some wiring for a customer & his furnace had quit & he reset it 3 or few times without it firing, so of course pumped oil into the firebox, He called me up & I changed nozzles & cleaned it etc, & as soon as I fired it I could tell something was wrong- " the excess oil burning, so I shut it down immediatly. Let the thing burn off with it blowing smoke out of the flue pipe joints. Thats when I saw no draft regulator on it........... Mike

Re: Draft Regulator

Unless the manufacturer says otherwise it should have a draft regulator installed.

Re: Draft Regulator

it is a draft divert er and if it a newer oil furnace it may be built into the back of the furnace.

What is the age, make and model.

I once was called out to service an oil furnace, when i arrived I asked if the ho had hit the reset. Oh yes three times just like the label said, said the ho. So I got a dime a nickle some emery paper tuned her up just wright primed the single stage pump and let her spark. The whole fire box became engorged in flame puffing black smoke into the house the flue pipe turned a curios shade of red and ho called the fire brigade. Before they arrived the fire burned out and all was well. Lesson learned don't trust HO check the box for a puddle of oil.

Don't you love the new Honeywell Primary Controls that you have to push and hold the button for at least a minute. Sure cuts down on HO over resetting the control.
