Crazy Talk, but fryer grease used to heat the home

A couple of years ago, there was a local story about somebody who bought some type of converter that turned fryer grease from his restaurant into fuel for his Mercedes diesel car. Now, I know I can be a little late on things of this nature, but, recognizing that heating oil is a form of Diesel fuel, I just was wondering why/if somebody has used that theory to convert fryer grease into heating oil.

Wouldn't it be handy to get heating oil from used fryer grease?

Seriously, it's out there. The grease traps are vaccumed out and the grease is converted into bio-diesel. Ok, the exact details are missing, and surely someone is going to point out some pitfalls. But the principle is a good one. Next step is to have furnaces that can operate on Bio diesel. It isn't too whacky.

It really does smell like fried food when it's burned from the stories I've heard about it.

One big pitfall, is that people have been doing it (refining) in their garage. With homebrewed equipment, fire is a real hazard.

I read an article (can't remember where), where there were some serious fires with non-lethal injuries.

Some municipalities were considering outlawing the practice in residential areas.

I would think that it would work in something like a waste oil burner that you find in a lot of diesel shops and such.

What he said!

i have a friend who worked HVAC for the city of Detroit. He has a seventy year old oil burning boiler in his home.

Since he worked for the city he had access to the municipal vehicle maintenance garages. Every month he would take about ten 20gal container of used motor oil home from the garage.

He would filter the used motor oil thru some jury rigged filter system and then put it his oil tank with an automotive filter in the feed line.

He went thru a lot orifice changes on his gun but it worked and heated like
blast furnace.
