Compressor Failure???

I went to a house saturday night for no cooling. Inside unit was running, outside unit running as well. Coil was not frozen, inside drybulb 78 degrees. Pressures on the Suction side: 100 PSI, pressure would rise to 108 then fall to 100, Liquid line 160 PSI. not a TXV coil. Compressor dosen't sound to good when running. This is a Carrier split system 3.5 Ton. Any suggestions?

Re: Compressor Failure???

what does it sound like when it shuts off? if it's a recipricating compressor then the low side reed valve may not be closing off allowing hi side to dump into the lowside. when it shuts down you can hear the hi side whoosh and hiss back through the valve.

Re: Compressor Failure???

Sounds like the compressor has internal problems and needs to be replaced. If it is a heat pump you might have reversing valve problems.

Re: Compressor Failure???

More info. is needed to diagnose but from your description you might be right about the compressor beginning to fail, there's usually a reason why compressors fail. Find out why and go from there.
