Clean Duct System?

I have a 30 year old home heated by a forced hot air system. My duct system has never been cleaned but I have heard that it is usually not necessary to do so unless you know there are rodents, etc in there. What are your thoughts? (I have always had a furnace filter in place & the whole system runs rarely as my coal stove pretty much warms the whole house unless the temp dips below 20 degrees)

Re: Clean Duct System?

Take a mirror and look down the cold air return. All of your house air passes over this dust many times a day. Is it necessary? No. Some people do it every year to control allergies, but it isn't going to make the system work any better in terms of efficiency.

Re: Clean Duct System?

another indictaion is if you shut the furnace off and pop the fan cover and run your index finger along the rounds of the squirrel cage..if it is minimal dusty your clean.wood floors verses carpeted floors can make a big difference on an exsisting system.that squirrel is a catch point for any and all dust moving into and thru the heating system.if you want to see if the return duct from upstairs is dirty...pop the grill on the wall for that return, roll up an old sheet into a tight ball and let it go and catch it down at the filter(if you have a straight drop down)should pick up something on the way down.
