Baseboard Circulation Question

I was in the basement of my house yesterday and all this time I never looked up to see and ponder. I don't know much about baseboard hot water heat, but I thought I knew in a general sense how it worked.

So I'll just generally explain what I have and see if it's fine or not. I have an oil fired boiler. It makes one complete loop. Off of this loop are my baseboard heaters tapped into it, like a sub loop. The inlet and outlet tap into the main, not in a linear fashion.

I don't understand open loop, closed loop....is the way this is set up fine or do I need to get a guy out here to fix it? This is obviously not something I ever want to tackle.

Well in Maine about this time of year you would need heat.
Your system discription sounds like it is piped as a primary loop.
The takeoffs you speak off are they tee's about 8-10" apart. In there a circulator at those connections with the arrow pointing away from the boiler? Do you have heat all through-out the house? Is the heat noisy?
Is there any radiant (underfloor heat involved)?

Re: Baseboard Circulation Question

No to the 8-10"
No to the pump
have heat yes, but some do not seem to put out much.
No radiant
I hear noise, the normal expansion. I haven't paid attention to all to see if they work.
