Re: What's Been Your Worst NAIL GUN Accident?

Nailed three fingers together once. Another occasion went into my hand below my thumb and out below my little finger (had it surgically removed). Twice put finish nails through my finger when holding miters on door jambs, finish nail hits a drywall screw and turns around back through my finger.

All in a day's work, I guess.

Shot with teco nail coming out of a framing gun about 10 feet away, hit my hand flat and broke the bone. At least I think it was the nail, it could have been the back hand I gave the f**ker that shot me.

Re: What's Been Your Worst NAIL GUN Accident?

a latino worker of mine shot a 3" framing nail threw his finger on the first day. I employed him for about a year after that. I figured if he was tough enough to not go home or even really stop working then he could stay. He had to use a hammer to get himself off the deck

I wasn't there but a dude I worked with said he had a new guy -- fat & pale -- nailing (actually stapling) off a roof. He didn't hear any noise for awhile so he went up the ladder to see whatsup. there's the NG laying passed out & when he goes to check him out he sees him stapled to the roof. Evidently NG was sitting down & scooting on his butt to nail; nail, scoot, nail, scoot. Well he musta missed one and when he tried to come back for it he hit a gonad instead!!! They cut around him and carried him like King Tut into the emergency room! (this was before cell phones)

Re: What's Been Your Worst NAIL GUN Accident?

Back when I was pretty green and had my first few guns, I used to use ALL long nails. My finish gun held 2 1/2's and that's all I used... Not once, but twice I poked my finger on the other side of the wood. through my piece, and into the hand holding it.

Thinking back, I'm not sure what I could have been working on... don't have my hand behind what I'm nailing... Doesn't make much sense now, but a finish nail to the bone hurts pretty good.

Re: What's Been Your Worst NAIL GUN Accident?

In 10 years my brother has shot himself with staple and nail guns countless times. Hands, feet, legs, arms, etc.

His worse one was nailing siding of all things and he shot a 1 3/4 in roofing nail right into his knee cap. My father had to take out the hammer of course and give it good yank for it to come loose which fallowed with a nice steady stream of blood.

He says that he likes nailing now but they hurt a lot more than staples!

Knock on wood, 10 years for me 50 roofs a year never been hit with a nail or staple, but tacked my hand a few times and cut myself hundreds of times.

Last year one of my workers hit me on the side of the head with a shingle on there first day of work. By the end of summer we were even when I put a duo fast in her finger! She looked at it, looked at me, then took out her little pliers pulled it out while making a very strange laugh and back to work.

Re: What's Been Your Worst NAIL GUN Accident?

Guy working with me was stepping between some 2/6's on a deck we were installing with his finger on the trigger and his left knee bumped the safety and he shot himself in the knee.

My wife (and boss) was making a small jewelry box drawer and decided to use a brad nailer to fix a loose fitting. She placed the drawer against her stomach and shot herself in the stomach.

She has since improved her safety performance AND her woodworking skills.

Re: What's Been Your Worst NAIL GUN Accident?

I have 3 nail gun accidents and hopefully no more

1) probably the worst and scariest

we were framing a 3000 sqft ranch model home in the middle of nowhere (midwest) in february. We had all the walls framed up and had a crane coming out to put up prefab trusses. less than an hour before the crane came in a sleet storm rolled in.

There was a min crane charge if ew turned it back so the lead decided that we would put up the trusses before calling the day. We had been on site for about 2-3 hours and it was cold as h3ll and now we had ice covering everything.

We pulled up the first decked and soffited gable and the wind was ripping it all over. it was one of the biggest gables i have seen, looking back it was kind of rediculous. so we get it set and were putting braces on. we had 2 guys on the walls, I was doing the bracing, had a guy rigging, and the lead standing around shouting.

So I'm jamming through bracing, rapid fire, we decided to put extra bracing b/c of the wind and we wouldnt be decking. So I get to a long brace and was scabing it together and the lead decides he nees to come and bark speed blah blah blah. so we move onto about hte third brace and he is standing oposite of me and im nailing and about the second or thrid nail the guard slides and the nail skims straight across the 2x and hits him dead center in the chest.

I thought i had just killed him. Fortunately he had on 2-3 sweatshirts a tshirt and cahart overalls and it didng penetrate, just gave him nice red spot.

2) another cold wet day i was stapling exterior foam and went to switch my gun to a framing gun. i had been arguing with another guy on the cerew and we were close to duking it out. i was PO'd and what not, i had on gloves and they were soaked, i couldnt get a grip on my relese so i sat the wide crown stapler across my leg to get a better grip and my glove had the trigger actuated and bammmm i ended up with one leg of a wide crown in my thigh....

3) framing a wall on the ground i skimmed the top of the 2x again and the nail went through the fatty party of hand betweeen thumb and first finger but bounced out when hitting bottom knuckle.

fortunately I havent had an accident in 10+ years now and am way more cautious b/c of the ones i have had.

Re: What's Been Your Worst NAIL GUN Accident?

Way back when fri. nights were more important to me than monday mornings ,so hung over you get dizzy when bending over.I was framing a 30' center bearing wall in an unpoured basement. The old senco I was using had a sticky pin behind the trigger...sooo great ,you dont even need to pull the trigger, just bump and shoot! About 3/4 the way down the wall I trip on a clod of dirt, drop the gun as I try to catch my balence.WHAM! oh SHT OH SHT O...PHEW I THINK .missfire i don't see a nail, just feels like a hammer blow to my ankle. Now im sitting and foreman's asking what im doing and im like"thought I just shot myself".So I go to pull my boot off...oh sht osht can't.Tounge is nailed on good.Right through the top of my ankle, right now I'm worried cause everyone knows how many little bones tendens and such...foreman wants to yank it.Nope get away from me I said.E. R. for me.
Mayo is a training facility, and they all had to see.the nail was flush on top and the point was sticking out about 3/8 inch near top of my arch.Surgeon was amazed and said he could not have held the gun to my ankle and shot me any better,I had missed everything. They wrapped a wire around the head ,pulled it out a little bit, then took channelocks see-sawing in and out to thread a drain-wick-thingy in the hole the nail created.

Re: What's Been Your Worst NAIL GUN Accident?

I was on the last rung of an eight ft ladder building fake beems on the ceiling. I had my nail gun hanging from my toolbelt. Of course the first thing i do when i buy a trim gun is get rid of the safety. When i grabbed the gun off my tool belt my finger engaged the trigger and the gun off sending a nail into my leg through my jeans. The head of the nail got stopped by my jeans and my leg was slighty bent in order to reach my gun. So here i am, one man crew, leg stuck in bent position because of the nail. I hobbled down the ladder and pulled nail. Finished day working and got stuck in traffic on the way home for three hours, when i got out of my truck i could hardly straighten my leg. This is just one of many nails that have met my body... Worst accident ive witnessed... Me and a fella i worked with were doing cornice work on Kiawa island south carolina... I was on one end of a 25 ft 2/12 cedar facia board he was the other with the framing nailer.. I think he had maybe three nails in the board when the gun bounced and he shot right through his index finger, sinking the head... I had to hand nail my end. get off the house and to retrieve skillsaw and cord to cut a piece of about 12inchs for him to carry to the hospital with his hand...A house was being framed next to the one we were trimming one time in dallas texas, a fella shot a framing nail through his knee nailing his leg bent, the dude weighed 300 plus. we had to help carry the poor guy to the truck..

Re: What's Been Your Worst NAIL GUN Accident?

Yall are making me cringe..
I have one of my own. i was nailing some trim up many years ago back when I was an emp. I was using a brad nailer with no safty. I somehow shot myself on the inside of my left elbow. Right in the joint.

point of note had a close call recently that taught me to never, never lend my nailers out again. I loaned it to a friend of mine who I had worked with before. i new he was capable. He was helping a friend close in a garage. One dumba#$ up on the roof nailing down osb, other dumba#$ IN garage cutting. Dumba@# up top goes off the line shoots a line of nails through osb narrowly missing dumba@# two. They told me this and i just shook my head as I coiled up my hoses and took my gun back.

Whilst nailing an extension onto a brace for a tall gable, my partner shot a nail into the brace, it blew out of the side and hit our buddy in the nose. Went in a good 1 1/2" straight in. We all laughed at him and he pulled it out. Then he went and sat in his car and rang everyone he new.

Re: What's Been Your Worst NAIL GUN Accident?

I was standing on a 6' ladder leaning against the inside of the exterior sheating. Was leaning over the top of wall and nailing something on the outside with framing nailer(cant remember what) when i missed the board and the inside stud and the nail went through the 1/2" sheating and into my knee about 1" above the cap. Droped the gun on the ground and had to pull myself of the wall. we were 30 miles away from any sort of first aid so my buddys tried to talk me into putting some pvc cleaner on it( i mentioned that on the tips trend) I refused and went back to work. Another time my buddy put a 16d in his wrist and someone had to stand on his hand while another used pliers to pull the nail out. Was working on a hospital once and a friend who works there come out and told us that mexican just came in with a nail trough his nut sack Had an inexperienced guy helping us once and we just told him not to hold the stud that close to the end when framing a wall on the floor but he did not listen and the gun bounced and double fired and shot him in the hand we pulled it out with pliers.dumass
