Question - At What Distance Is Welding Still Dangerous To Eyesight

Heya Guys,

Okay this may seem a little off the path, but...

My wife and I were driving through town today and noted that there is still a crew doing repairs to the milk plant. They were out in front welding large pipes and such.

My wife asked me if that was dangerous to passers by or not.

I really had to admit to her that I did not know the real answer. I told her I suspected that it was probably not an issue for folks in the traffic lanes where we were but it did raise an interesting question.

At what distance does one no longer need to concern themselves with viewing welding in progress?

Thanks

I don't know the answer, although I should, probably do and forgot. It's been a lot of years.

If I remember correctly, it's something like 100 ft according to AFL/CIO regs. If they're using 3/8" JetRod, the parameters could be different. Usually all applications are shielded.

I do weld my rebar installations and we 'hood'. We are also a small co.
