Just stop them

I was at a jobsite today. I really try my best to mind my own business, because it's none of my business what others are doing or how they're doing it.

2 guys were putting up some crown on kitchen cabinets. They had the type of crown that wasn't what I call the typical angle. It was the small stuff that was more like 40° or so.

So the young guy put the piece onto the saw, had his 45 all set, he was lining it up when I turned around and saw what he was doing.

"STOP!" I yell.

"What?"

"I'm sorry, it's none of my business, but you're gonna cut your ****ing hand off cutting that crown that way"

He had the angle TOWARDS him instead of upside down and against the fence. His hand was right there close to the blade, he was trying to keep it stable.

It was gonna catch and yard his hand into the saw blade.

Just stop them if you see them. Don't watch the accident....stop them.

No wonder the construction industry has such a bad rap. I'm beginning to believe people when they say we're idiots.

Im trying to picture this. so instead of laying the crown flat on the bed of the saw, was he trying to hold the crown like it was already nailed to the wall and then using a 45 degree cut.

tcholdren, it sounds like he was holding the crown like he was cutting it on the angle only instead of against the fence it was towards him.

Good job framerman! That sounds just plain crazy holding it like that! I too mind my own business almost all the time, but if I saw someone doing something I knew was gonna hurt them or someone else I would say something.
Heck I wish someone would have yelled at me a couple years ago. I was working along cutting some PT ballusters for a deck. I was in a hurry cause it was raining. I wasn't thinking and just needed to nip the length a little. I didn't put the balluster against the fence, just held it in the middle of the table. The blade caught the wood and split it into a few pieces and cut the tip of my middle finger right down the middle verticly! To this day I still don't feel anything at the end of my finger.

Yep. That's almost as dumb as trying to cut a 4" pvc elbow with a miter saw. I couldn't get to that guy in time. His thumb is a bit shorter now. The PVC elbow was in a thousand pieces. He's lucky he didn't loose an eye from all the shrapnel.

PVC and fast spinning blades just don't mix.

I remember 2 carpenters who were twin brothers. They were using a table saw to rip and cross cut whatever for formwork. Anyway they soon got bored of the fence, gaurd and riving knife so off they came. Next thing one of these guys has a thumb missing. Fast forward a couple of days later the brother with all ten of his digits starts back at work. An hour into the job he starts complaining he aint making the cash fast enough (price work). Off come the fence, gaurds and riving knife. This time I blew up at him. When he wouldnt put them back on I had to snitch. Yeah he got fired and didnt make the dough that week but at least he can still count to 10.

Having seen finger cut off, twice (one was actually ripped off, wedding band), a belly ripped open, various small injuries, several deaths and an electrician hanging off a beam (ladder fell over), you should always say something, I'll never understand how people do some of the stupid things they do or don't observe the simplest of safety protocols. Good job, hopefully the bonehead learned something.

There are enough injuries without stupidity involved.

once, as a kid, 16yrs old, the tip of my sawzall blade was wearing out, i decided it would be a good idea to cut the blade back, hell there was plenty of good teeth further back. so i put it in the chopbox, bring the blade down, even intended to put a 22 degree angle on it. MAN WAS I SURPRISED at how hard hardened steel is. got a nice gash, nothing a little ducttape would not fix. if only someone was there to say something G

On a selfish note: Hopefully the snitching will help WC rates we pay.....in some way...?
