Re: Have Some Safety Concerns

Thanks for coming back for an update!

well, it seems like the situation has been explained to you...Legal or not, now you have to decide whether the job is worth the risks. I know I COULDN'T be an iron worker on high rises...or change light bulbs on the golden gate bridge.

I don't even like being on 5 flights of scaffolding or a 40' ladder! But, I'll do it if I'm the senior on the crew, and would never force someone to do something I won't do myself, or if I know they are seriously afraid....some guys seriously have balls of steal!

I'm middle of the road when it comes to heights, I'm always afraid, but after years of doing high work I've gotten much more comfortable and most people do over time.

One last thing....DON"T do anything you're not comfortable with, there's no shame in that! Some people are fearless (stupid IMO), and it is nice to have someone like that on the crew....like the guy who'll carry 2 bundles of shingles, not everyone can do it, great if they do, but again stupid IMO.

It's good to hear you're not being forced to do some of the more sketchy stuff. Either you'll acclimate or you'll move on! Just don't be stupid! Sorry for the long post!

Re: Have Some Safety Concerns

I have said it before, but I'll say it again...

I have 2 great children and one on the way with my smokin' hot wife. Hunting season started and the bucks are just startin' to chase.
My cool jeep loves gettin' muddy and God drives my values and morals....

I think I'd miss all that if I fell off some dogarn pole barn and seriously injured or killed myself because I didn't want to ruin some guy's business who could care less about mine.

Go home to your family or Xbox360 or whatever... It sure beats an employer who breaks the law and doesn't care about his employees...

Have him contact me. I'll talk to him.

I do agree with your stand-in boss on this one. With anything you do, certain risks are involved. The key is to make calculated risks instead of stupid ones.

Now, I am going to take issue with this. I don't know how this would fly anywhere, no matter the building you are working on. Unless he is classifying you as a 1099 subcontractor...and if you don't have your own insurance (GL), I would suggest that you run, not walk, from this job, if it is as dangerous as you make it out to be.

I have been working with him for a few weeks now and it is becoming very clear that he does not take many, if any, safety precautions. The thing with me is that it takes a lot for me to be concerned about my safety. I generally do not follow safety precautions when doing many things, it's just the way I am.

I guess I will tell you all what type of work this is. We are building a decent size pole barn, not sure of the dimensions.

The things I am most concerned about is he is doing nothing to protect us from falls. He is very experienced and is able to balance easily on things like floor joists, rafters, etc., but I am not. He seems to expect me and the other crew member to be able to do that type stuff, but I would think that would take some time to get the hang of. He uses no safety harnesses of any kind and does not offer any to us. Also, since I am new to this, I don't know if the way he is doing things is the correct way, just with no safety equipment, or if there is a proper way to set up things so you do not have to balance on joists, rafters, etc.

This is my biggest problem. It is really hard to find any type construction job around here when you have no experience. If it was easy to find one, I would just quit. Is there any way to get him to use proper safety precautions without loosing my job? He seems to have the mentality that doing things safe take too much time. I wish it was as easy to just be able to quit and just find another job, but the current economy makes it hard to find any job.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Re: Have Some Safety Concerns

I may have found a roofing job that seems like it will be more for me. They actually offer benefits and I will be insured. I would be getting actual paychecks, not 1099'ed. I explained to him all of my concerns about my current job in an email and he ended up giving me a call saying he liked my response and he would like me to start asap. I still have to call him back, but so far this seems like a much better job for me.

Is this man going to take care o you and your family if something happens to you??? Even if your not married and no children; what about your parents???

The first person responsible when it comes to safety for you is...YOU! The next person responsible in safety for you is your local OSHA office!

As for a good company for you to work for...look in your area, get a phone book and sit down and call Steel Fabricators, Component Fabricaors, and/or Steel Erectors. Be honest with them and tell them you do not have the experience but are willing to learn and even get into any training classes in-house that they may have.. Someone will hire you; just remember they started somewhere just like you. Good Luck! Holler if you need some help! ccathey

Re: Have Some Safety Concerns

I worked up high alot and hated every minute of it. I agree that being nervous makes you much more unstable, glad you found another job though I'm in the camp that working up high like that is not for me. Now about 3 feet from the floor behind my desk is about as high as I go..
