Good Idea For Saftey

Hey guys I dont know how many of you guys do this. But since I work alone all the time. If I leave the jobsite to go to lunch or whatever I ALWAYS UNPLUG EVERY power tool, take batteries out of batt tools, and ALWAYS UNPLUG ALL NAIL GUNS. You neve know when the H.O. or thier children or any other person may wander onto your jobsite. Then people are less likely to hurt themselves on your saw or something.
Just something to keep in mind.

I re-entered this biz as a soloist and one of my early jobs had an overactive 10 yr. old.

I bought a Stanley 15A remote control made for Christmas lights and hooked it up this way. Remote control, extension cord, power strip and tools. I hooked the remote to my beltloop and anytime that I had to leave the area, I hit the button and shut everything down.

After a few hours he went back to playing with his Legos and left me alone.

wow that's a great idea.
Reminds of my bosses twin boys. They'll come to jobsites and literally climb up the ladder onto the roof and start talking to me. He's like "Guys maybe you should get down." They could care less. Then when he turns I do the throat cutting motion. They get down real quick. Sorry I'm a bitter person.

I've learned to live by this practice since I have become a father. Good post, and great idea Teetor.
A friend of mine was up on his roof (2 stories) and putting on a new chimney cap when he heard "daddy" and turned around to find his 2 yr old coming across the roof at him with open arms. Said it scared him more than anything he'd ever seen before.

Great reminder post Bob. That is something my grandfather instilled in me years ago to unplug whenever your going to be gone-especially if little kids and idiotic adults are around, so it's just become habit over time

snapper: dude, I bout had a heart attack putting myself in that position

I had damn near the same thing happen with my middle son, same age, 7/12 pitch, 2 story's up, I about craped a brick!

I tell ya, that tuff little tike hasn't ever been scared of a thing! He's 18 now and still a danger to humanity......Can't blame him, after all, he was born on my birthday.

Re: Good Idea For Saftey

Not to topic change as usual my sign guy called and we were talking, told me yesterday after the wife and his kids left he kept hearing what sounded like a lil child crying/screaming. Went on for about 10 minutes until he decided to check it out and see what it was, once outside he noticed a little 4yr that was standing on the corner all by herself (luckily not a heavily traveled area) crying she wants her mommy. So he gets in his Jeep to drive over and asks out the window (he's very paranoid since little children and male adults seem to cause uproars in ANY situation.

Come to find out her mom had left to run errands and left the little girl home taking her nap, little girl woke up to a empty house and went outside looking for mommy and had locked herself out of the house. Buddy asks her last name and recognized it so he got on the cell and called the grandparents to which the grandmother said she'd be right over and did'nt sound too happy.

Myself I would've called the police and had the kid put in a home until everything was sorted out since that is just plain wrong, dangerious and stupid. Buddy was thinking at first maybe a older brother was watching her and lost track, or mom was hurt, etc...and then come to find out the mom really did go do errands As a father this is totally unacceptable IMO and the beeotch should have to answer to somebody other than a pizzed off in law.

That's what I'm talking about, accidents are one thing since it's hard to watch the lil ones every second of a day so them getting into things they should'nt are a fact of life, but just out and out abandonment by a parent....that's going too far. toooo many things could've gone wrong in this situation.

Yes,

We always unplug everything....and shut-off and disconnect too...when not on site.
At the end of the day - When working 'in' or 'on' an area or even if it is attached to an occupied dwelling........We do the same and try to also 'neaten up' and organize the tools. I think it makes a good impression on the property owner when they see things always neat. (Even on commercial jobs).
Also - We only leave our tools on-site on a 'secure' & occupied residential job. Otherwise, the tools go with us...
We have gotten some good use out of the 'yellow caution tape' - when working in commercial office buildings - people are naturally curious and want to 'see what's going on'.

BTW - We picked this up from another General contractor friend .
It may have no actual legal recourse, but I include it in my residential contracts. It's a point that says basically: By signing, the homeowner understands and accepts the risks and dangers involved in the improvement work he has contracted us to do on his home or property.
That they are also aware of the location we are working on, and agrees to monitor his minor children and to keep them from entering the work site.
Yes, we are responsible for the safety of his family, but He is primarily responsible to keep them safe and inform them to stay away....power tools, ladders, staging, not touching,....danger, etc...

RobertCDF: Somewhere on here I read where you were wanting a way to refill you co2 powered tanks. I ran into same problem, I fixed it by accident, went to a used restrant supplier, and they had co2 tanks from cola, machines , regulators, quick connects etc, purchased 2 tanks set them on my 2 trucks, and filled them from my co2 tank in shop for welding, since they have a tube running down to bottom of tank, I now just walk over to truck and fill small tanks, by the way, with a set of scales, I can refill paint ball cartridges, along with weighing the tanks we use to insure we do not over fill. However, GA DOT made me put covers on valves, even though they were not explosive.

Unplugging is standard practice on our jobs, or maybe it just seems that way because they see the safety man (me) coming to make sure they are following our rules, lol

I see far too many people leaving everything they own plugged in for no reason, especially dangerous things like saws.

I'll leave a tool plugged in if I'm near it, but move or unplug everything when I'm not. One thing I always do is take the shot strip out of the powder actuated guns.

Another good idea is to pull down any ladders at the end of the day or when you leave for lunch.
Years ago when I worked for a sider, when we left for lunch, the HO's twin 4 year old daughters had climbed up on a porch roof.Fortunately they didn't get hurt.Mom was ready to kill us.
