Yeah, I'm still baffled by the
concept of "shorts" that go
down almost to the shoe tops?
WTF is that about?

The one that gets me is wearing a ball cap sideways, or at a 45. I can see wearing it backwards when you're working on something and the bill gets in the way, but WTF is this sideways BS?

Makes me want to slap them so there head matches the angle of their hat.

sorry to hear that man... thank god you let go of the throtle. I once workin on a job a while back saw a guy do that but he took half of his leg off. By the grace of god he made it to the hospital and actually lived the ordeal... but for me no matter how big or small the job i always throw my chaps on. It really changes the way you work when you see **** like that happen.

Re: Cut Myself With A Chainsaw Today

I found out that the Carhartt double fronts AND a set of the saw chaps are what you need...slipped on a moss covered rock, went backwards and tried to toss the 044 forwards tword the tree as it was on the ground already instead of holding onto the saw as I went backwards...the saw caught me just above the knee, went thru the chaps and both layers of the pants....just gave me a scrape, enough to let me thenk about it for a few days....thank gosh for the double layers and the chaps, if not you'd be calling me gimpy. Glad you didn't git nicked too bad...

Hey, they ain't invented a foolproof that can't be defeated by a good enough fool. That's why we're given these opportunities to get religion before the hammer falls.

I have a scar on my leg from doing the exact same thing with a Stihl. When it idles it still spins slowly, but enough to do some damage. I didn't want to pay an extra $100 for the kind with the idle stop.

Oy. I've never seen one like that, and don't care to. It's all too easy to cut yourself on the chain without the motor even running!

But. Whaling and flailing at de-limbing, with the saw getting heavy because I haven't done that sort of thing for a while... I finished a cut and let the saw drop. Right onto my leg.

All praise to the man above and his minions who watch over me. I had let go of the throttle and the chain was all but stopped. Don't let your guard down, guys!

Back in 1985 - Hurricane Gloria roared into CT. As an 18 yo, I was instantly employed by my neighbors to cut up trees that had fallen.

After all day cutting up a HUGE willow tree with my 14" McCullough Eager Beaver, my backyard neighbor wanted me to zip through a few branches on his property. I eagerly complied - especially for more cash - even though I was dead tired. I finished that and he asked me to cut up a rather large branch that was draped down on the lawn, while still connected to the tree about 15' up the trunk. I didn't feel like whipping out a ladder to cut it off the tree before I cut it up on the ground, so I decided to cut all the branches waist high and let the rest of it 'fall' to the ground. Well, I got to the last branch (about 3" in dia) and proceeded to cut it from underneath (it was bowed from all the weight above), and prepared myself for a quick exit to let the branch fall.

I didn't get halfway through that branch before it violently snapped and pushed the saw (going at full speed) against my left leg for a split second. I ran out of the way, the branch fell, and I felt a burning sensation in my left thigh. I stopped the saw, took off the gloves & glasses and noticed a tear in my jeans. I didn't see anything at first and thought the saw just 'scratched me' and tore up my jeans. I pulled up the pant leg a bit and what I saw freaked me out. Not a lot of blood, but a gaping wound that was about 1" wide right in my thigh. Off to the hospital I went....

I cut about 1/2" into my quadriceps muscle. The whole thing was about 6" long and needed 185 stitches in three layers to close it up. I have a nice scar to remind me of it every day. All I can say is that the Beaver was certainly eager, and that I will never be that stupid or lazy again with a chainsaw.

Glad to hear you were lucky!

Try reducing the idle speed slighly and increasing the tension of the chain. That will get it to stop and stay stopped at idle.

I can well imagine! OTOH, sometimes the anticipation is worse than the sight. I think it took me nearly a full minute to peel back the pantleg and look, because I just knew I couldn't be that lucky.

Stories like that are worth repeating. You never know when that might just throw a teaspoon of extra caution into someone... and even he will never know how he might have fared if he hadn't heard about someone else's accident.
