A year and a half ago, before I had prescription coverage, I found myself with several coronary artery blockages. Once they had been taken care of, my doctor prescribed several medications that added up to quite a bit of money out of pocket.
At his suggestion, we used one of the on-line prescription services. We got the first order just fine. Although the pharmacy was located in Canada, the drugs came in plain wrappers from all over the world (I definitely recall one was shipped from New Zealand). When we refilled them, instead of the shipment of medicine, we got a letter from US Customs saying something to the effect:
"Hey, we got this package addressed to you that appears to contain prescription drugs. We're sure you wouldn't do anything illegal like ordering something like this, so, unless we hear otherwise from you, we'll do everyone a favor and destroy them."
We contacted the on-line pharmacy and they posted a credit to our credit card after we FAXed them the Customs letter. When I told my doctor what happened, he said, "Are they still doing that?" We decided it wasn't worth the hassle.
Now we have prescription coverage. Before we did, we found the most helpful and cost effective solution was at Walmart's pharmacy. For example, he discovered that one of my prescriptions cost the same if I got it at twice the dosage. By doing that and cutting the pills in half, I saved a considerable amount of money. We compared lots of other sources and found that they had the most reasonable prices as well.
Of course, as with anything, your milage may vary. Good luck.
