NuTone Intercom

Ran into a service call and the homeowner wanted me to upgrade his Intercom. They had an old Nutone wood-grained AM-FM intercom with a cassette player in it.(YES, A CASSETTE PLAYER!) Anyway, the installed wiring for the intercom is old fashioned ribbon cable. My question is, can the ribbon cable be used in an upgraded NuTone or M&S intercom or do i just re-run all new cable to the stations? (not an easy task unless i cut drywall)

Is it shielded cable? How many conductors? Type of plug on the end?

Highly unlikely that you can use the existing. There may be an adapter available. If not, get out your soldering gun. Will not be so difficult!

Re: NuTone Intercom

It is sheilded with 8 conductors(red stripe at one end) with a white, clear rectangle plug.

Re: NuTone Intercom

This will all depend on the existing wiring layout(home-ran, looped, etc) and what kind of equip. you plan on using. I'm sure you can make it work without tearing up the walls. Nutone sells retrofit master stations that cater to most scenarios.

Cassette tape...they still have...Ever seen one with an 8-track?

Re: NuTone Intercom

There are certain one's that can still be connected to the existing 3-wire (as you call it, 'ribbon cable') system. I did one not too many months ago, and it had a record player in it. How's that for old? I had to call NuTone tech support to get a (very short) list of what naster units can still use the existing call boxes and remote speakers.

Cool, still working?

I just saw a 45 rpm record player in a '59 Chrysler the other day.

You betcha, it's still working. I piped the existing NuTone record player in through the "aux" input on the new master unit.

For those that need this old/vintage NuTone intercom stuff repaired, there's only one guy in the country I can recommend. He has a sea of NOS parts for them:

Tape-Medic (now called Pro-Tech Electronics)
15686 Marsh Rd
Waynesboro, PA 17268-9038
Phone: (717) 762-1809

Re: NuTone Intercom

no offense but a couple replies steering you in the wrong direction. with the 8 conductor wire you can use almost any nutone intercom. some functions may or may not be available depending on the way you wire or the way the wire is ran. best choice is to re-wire where ever you can with cat+59+2 depending on what options the client is looking for.

some of the features that you may miss out on depending are doorbell chime AND intercom or doorcam/speaker, etc.

good luck. repost with more details if you have more questions

Hey, I was talking about the 3-wire systems. Not really responding to the OP.

Another option to take a look at is M&S. I have seen some of their retro-fit stuff and it was decent. The room stations are quite a bit smaller than the old school 70's stuff and the make a white trim ring to cover the old larger hole so you dont need to patch & paint.
