ned info for charleston sc LVE install

Hi my name is chris and i need some help.

I am going to install cat6 and coax in a small office building being built with metal stud walls. There is a gap between the 2nd floor(concrete) and the framework for the the can lights and drywall. My question is can the cables lay on top of this framework or do they need to be run a special way to pass inspection in Charleston SC. I have installed this stuff in NY but never in a new build situation that will be inspected. Any help would be great, and thanks.

If there's not a suspended ceiling, I'd just say you have to keep them neat, away from any high voltage power/ lighting circuits, and wired in a workmanlike manner.

I can't imagine they'd be more strict in Charleston than in New York.

Don't think Charleston would be more lenient then NY, there are a lot of historic districts and consequently some of the regulations are tighter. The strictest code takes precedence so check the local codes and see what they mandate for your location. Any chance of running through the studs using inserts?

South Carolina is comparable to California in code enforcement. I would definately call local code officer and get his input before beginning this.

I will go much smoother for you. As I m not an electrician I will not offer advice further than that.

The phone numbers for Charleston Building Inspection services are here:

Call the numbers Wizard posted here and all will go well.

You will love your time in Charleston, beautiful small town city. Warmer this time of year as well .. Next week we drop back into the upper 50's, from the upper 70's of this week, so bring your swim suit We'll be looking for our long johns, hahaha
Hopefully you or who you are working for has applied for the needed Licenses as well. Chas follows the IRC. just for your own enjoyment while working in Charleston, if talking to an inspector do not say "we do it this way in NY" or "up North we do this or that"
After Hugo the diversity of Contractors & population in whole that flooded SC, especially Charleston area, (I was one as well from up North) they heard that 100 different times a day and now their reply is "then go back to NY and do it your way, there", from there they will pick at things they would not even consider looking at any other time.
Working with the inspectors downtown in the historic district, especially, the inspectors become good friends when you "ask" them how they like to see it, or ask "do you think this way would be better". Allow them to feel important & you will enjoy your work.

Thx for input everyone. I figured I would follow NY code and do it neatly. I've been here since last Feb and love it I grew up in VA beach and then the cold of Rottenchester NY sucked the life out of me. I personally am not licensed but I am working as a "laborer" for the builder who is Licensed. The building is also not a historical building. Yes I can run through the studs with inserts, just not every where. Thanks again for all the responses.
