Probably right. I'm just guessing. I hate to ever admit that the brits would have ever influenced anything we've ever done in this trade.

Yea, and if they could just speak the language right it would make for a better world.

Hate to burst your bubble MD but, I saw the show Myth Busters and they did the "no echo from a ducks quack tale" and they indeed found that a duck quack does echo. They used a lot of fancy and sophisticated audio equipment and proved that a ducks quack does echo. Myth Busted.

Leo, I watch that show sometimes. They do manage to bury a lot of urban legends, many of which I have never heard of.

I watch it when I can. I like to watch them blow things up.

Re: Cat5e For Phone

This is not an answer for you current dilema, but I have adopted a very simple rule that has saves countless headaches. This is for both phone and cable tv. ALL jacks are home runs, no matter how simple it would be to just hook together and penetrate to the other side of the wall into another room.We run all lines to wherever the services are located on the house, and leave a loop of slack. Then contact the service provider to hook into the existing or provide a new interface box.The new hi quality tv pictures cannot be split like you could do a few years ago. These monster screen/high def units need the full signal strength.
Just one day crawling around an attic or opening every jack in the house to try to find the trouble spot will make you glad to pay for the extra cable required. The structured wiring boxes that accept plug in modules are great if budget allows, as they easily allow the lines to be reconfigured later.

Then Cat 5 or 6 makes sense, they save tons on the phone bill, and your connections are to the router. If you get wireless phones with one main base station, you solve the problem of having to be near the ATA box.

This took my phone bill down from $150/month to $29/month. I did go to Packet8 from Vonage - Vonage has a LOT of network issues. Packet8's network was designed by a guy I am now consulting for - he is brillant and the network is clear as a bell.

I just wish their customer service was friendly.........but you can't have everything.

Yes except in this case wouldn't quite work in his situation because he daisychained the cable.
Brenda if your going to Voip anyway why not use Skype? My phone bill for the year was $35 with unlimited U.S. calling and voicemail. (Although back home I have AT&T DSL w/WiFi which gets me basic phone, medium speed internet, and WiFi access at Barnes and Noble, McDonald's, and UPS stores, etc. (total cost $28/month)
If you want to use your existing phones get a DLink DPH-50U or Actiontec Vosky Call Center.
(I'm also testing AOL's free incoming line with voicemail and have my parents and fax on OneSuite.com)

But Skype runs over the Internet "at large", not over a groomed network. It can be choppy at times, and does require that you are near your computer, unless, of course, you have a wireless interface.

Packets do get dropped and packet loss comes out in lost syllables.

If you all hang on until early next year (don't buy the UTS phone from Vonage) - there WILL be great WiFi phones coming out that can replace cellular for a fraction of the monthly cost. Thats all I can say!

MD, I have been lurking here for a while. I have been imressed with your knowledge. BUT, after your quacking echo explanation I am also impressed with your sense of humor. Tell me. When you go fishing, do you use bait or just talk them into the boat?

PS. You remind of my Dad. (BTW, the smartest guy in the world!)

I've tried fishing several times. Just couldn't get into it. Too boring for me. I have a hard time relaxing. My wife even takes the kids on vacation without me. Consequently, she likes to fish. Her people have a lake home that she visits from time to time.
