Attaching Flat Screens To Metal Stud Wall

I have mounted several hundred flat sceens to wood stud walls, but never to a interior metal stud wall. I am mounting two 37'' Vizio's and a 50'' Vizio one of the 37'' he wants on a cantilever bracket and the other two on tilt brackets. Just wanted to know what you guys thought the best way to attach the mounts to the wall is?? Thanks for the help!

Re: Attaching Flat Screens To Metal Stud Wall

ive only done one on metal studs, 42" with a tilt bracket. it was 22 gauge 3 1/2' studs with 5/8s rock glued and screwed. we used 4 1/4" toggler wall anchors. tv has been up over two years with no problems. you can get them at home depot for like 10 bucks a bag of 8. I dont think i would try it with the cantilever, I would open the wall and block it out.

Inssert blocking or thru bolt w/blocking if there is a closet on the other side.

The customer can afford a little drywall patch. I wouldn't trust toggles unles they were quadrupled.

I have used self tapping screws (#12) into 18 gauge structural studs with no problem with a Vizio 50". Don't try any drywall plugs...too heavy, maybe attach a finished piece of wood (oak, maple, etc.) to the studs with self tappers and hand the TV bracket off that.

Maybe I should also clearify alittle more that we put the togglers through the drywall and the studs, so it would have to pull through the steel and the drywall to come out of the wall.

Re: Attaching Flat Screens To Metal Stud Wall

Thanks for all the help. I belive that I am going to use toggles through the studs where I can, and big toggles everywhere else. I am not too worried about the tilt mount TV's but most concerned about the cantilever, I think I am going to have to do some additional support.

I ended up useing 3/8'' toggle bolts into the metal studs. Ended up being a real nice install everthing worked out fine, and it is very strong.

Re: Attaching Flat Screens To Metal Stud Wall

I've done lots of these, mostly in commercial settings, and so far no complaints. Never use lags or self-tappers. Always use toggles. The holes through the drywall can be quite big after you drill your holes, so I use plastic bushings that are the thickness of the sheetrock. It gets rid of that slack, assuring the mount won't be sliding around in the future. And that's important for an articulating mount that's always being moved around and tinkered with.

Wow! You supply your tenants with flat screens. Hey if they're happy...all that counts I guess.
