This is really confusing. Isn't Atlanta one of the top 10 most populous cities in America? Why would you need to travel for work especially with only a 4 man crew?

What exactly do you mean by "Not licensed." and is it really possible to be a "Legitimate business" without being licensed?

In Illinois he couldn't even list himself as a plumbing contractor without everyone on the crew having a plumbing license.

Re: Plumbing Crew Available

I saw crews like that in SoCal. There was a repipe company that hired crews of Eastern Europeans. He had at least 7 crews of 5 working steady.

The owner would pay the crew chief and then the chief would disburse the funds to the crew. Only the crew chief was 1099 and whether the crew paid taxes wasn't the owner's problem.

I did the repair work on the repipes and I certainly learned what not to do. I was paid from the offending crew's 10% hold-out, so I wasn't very popular with those ol' boys.

Some of the European's are good mechanics, we have had some of them organized into or local, we had one working for us when it got really busy over the summer.

Re: Plumbing Crew Available

Sorry if I threw any of you guys for a loop. I am not A licensed plumber. I do have a business license. The business owners I work for understand what I am talking about. Yes, Atlanta is a very large city. I enjoy working out of town. My kids are grown and I like to travel. I don't 1099 anyone. I have been plumbing since the late 70s and never got my license. I have been working "for hire" for other companies for 12 years. Sorry guys but nothing negative here. Just a guy with a contracting service looking for some work.

I guess the laws are different in GA.

In NM you're an employee (taxes withheld) or you're a contractor.

If you're a contractor you hold a current NM contractors license that covers the work done.

In any event, contractor or employee, the guy who does the work has a journeyman's license.

At least, that's what the law requires.

Journy has to be on site. Tax wise, I think he is just 1099'd. I think the term "subcontractor" has different meanings with the state, than we do in this biz. I must say I have never heard of a crew that's a company that doesn't have a license. That is a big risk to the PC or GC until a solid relationship is made.
