Yep I seen it, it sucks when your the wrong flavor. I just dont understand why nobody raised hell over it. If bush was president and his stimulus package was to make jobs for only white people the would hit the fan.

Re: Looking For Work In The MI Area

It's because of the Liberal Lefts veiws of working America, They feel that people of color have been held back by white people, so now that Obama is President they figure they can change the work force, when you have Congress members like Rangle of New York there is a better chance for color people to get those Good paying jobs, and let the whites have the low paying jobs that the color folks have worked for decades.

Re: Looking For Work In The MI Area

I was talking with a friend of mine who lives down in Texas last night, He was giving me some information about work down there, He was telling me that there is work in and around Galveston they have planned for the next three years. So it maybe my time to finally say Good-Bye to Michigan my girlfriend and I have to talk it over some more and work out the details. I still haven't heard back from the State about my License so I figure they aint gonna give it to me so maybe it is the writing on the wall. Time to get the F*** out of this F***** UP State.

Re: Looking For Work In The MI Area

I've lived here for 50 years and have seen the ups and downs, cause of the auto industry, which my income comes from those people who work in that industry. But it's the State Goverment that has been voted in, that's like when Deomocrats have control all hell breaks loose. Look at what Jenny and her Party have done, and then they point fingers why things are so wrong. Higher Taxes like they are is killing every working person in this State. Texas has lower wages but theres work down there. cost of living is less to compared to Michigan. there's work here you just have to have a trade that sets you part from everyone else. Over the past 24 years I have seen guys come and go in my trade, most of these guys who do Plaster are really drywallers, but call themselves Plasterers. But when it come to the Ornate Plaster work they have no clue. so then they farm the job out and add their % to it, So I don't know I feel like I'm in between a rock and hard place at times. and then a job will come in. Plus my trucks need work before I could make the trip.

I cant help but laugh at your situation. The funny thing is Im in the same boat and dont know what to do. I dont want to get a job because the pay sucks and Im the type of person who gets stuck in a rut. I'll do the same stupid job my whole life like my dad and see I screwed up when I need to retire. I wanted my own business because I figured I could make more money at it and be able to do what I like. Ive got the electrical license, builders license, and welders certification. I figured I should be able to make some money but I guess not. I wanted to get a welder/generator. I know a few of those guys and they make good money but dont have a lot of work.

The economy is bad enough plus these damn medical bills took every penny I have and the transmission in my truck wont shift. Its like it never ends. Moving out of the country looks like a good idea but Im not sure if there is any country any better.

Re: Looking For Work In The MI Area

Mike, damn with all that you should have no problems finding work. The only thing that keeps me going are these small jobs I get here and there. the biggest thing is the phone isn't ringing for estimates. I have talked with other guys from other trades and everyone has allot of down time, so I don't feel to bad. I just keep working on my own house, which is good cause when I'm busy I don't have the time or energy like I use to have. I put a addition on my house back in 1999 this gave us room for a foyer and new bathroom, I am now just finishing up the plumbing and started work on the garden tub I'm making, but then when I run out of materials then I'm stuck. but so far I am getting it done. I have to finish up the drain system and then the plumbing will be done, Then I can start working on the walls and ceiling. I still have sky lites to install, but thats when it warms up.

Re: Looking For Work In The MI Area

I think my biggest problem is last year was my first whole year in the business and the broken bones put me out all summer, about 6 months. I dont really know anyone to find any sub work and I the people who Ive done past work for are cheap skates who I'll never work for again. If I could have been in it 2 or 3 years ago I would probably be doing pretty good right now. There was so much building going on here in the past 5 years alot of GC became millionaires. Since June Ive only had the one small 1 hour electrical job.

I keep working on my own stuff too, mostly farm equipment. I just wish I had more money to spend on it. I hope things get better this spring atleast for a little while.

Re: Looking For Work In The MI Area

With the way things are I have been thinking about going to school and pick up heating and cooling trade again. I went to school back in 1991 for HVAC but had to drop out, I finished the heating part of the course but didn't finish the refridgeration part. I know this trade doesn't see lay offs cause people will always need heat and cooling. I just have to find out how much it will cost, I already have student loans pre aproved I just have to sign and take the loans, I just aint ready for sitting in a classroom all day

Ive always wanted my HVAC license but you have to work as a apprentice for years, then as a journeyman under a master for a few years then pay a fortune to pass the exam. It would probably be a good thing to get into, people here need heat and a furnace isnt something the average guy if going to play with.

I would like to have a nice building to work on tractors to buy fix up and resell. I seem to have a god given mechanical gift and people always need food so I dont see farming ever leaving.

Bid a wall of book cases last week ,i bid it for 1600 ,700 was material ,they said they have a guy that will do it for a grand and I did the drawing . I told them to go for it,that was the lowest price I have ever given ,my work speaks for it's self . Screw it .

Ive been finding the HO tells you what your going to charge them and if you wont take it then they either dont have the work done. Or if you done past work for them they will hire someone else even if they they charge more just to show you they dont need you. I guess they figure then next time you will take what they offer you.

Re: Looking For Work In The MI Area

Well I got a call the other day from one of my customers who just got back from the Bahamas they were down there from Jan 5 intil Feb 20 so now I have work again, they want me to paint their kitchen and stain a new island they had built, plus they put in some french doors and crown mouldings in two bedrooms, so for the past two days I have been working, but from what they have told me I should be busy for a couple of months now, plus they are paying T&M
My girlfriend talked to her Mother last night they are down inTexas on the east side of the state, she was saying there is so much construction work going on and not enough workers.

Re: Looking For Work In The MI Area

Hey, I was talking with the Homeonwer and he was telling me all of the work he wants done, which should keep me busy for awhile, Then the neighbor stopped by as I was leaving, and we talked. I did his stucco on his house last fall, he was telling me he needs some painting and he wants me to drywall his basement. So I don't know it looks like I may get back on my feet after all. now I just have to start paying down my Bills, I cancelled all my credit cards. I have about $6,000 I owe.

Re: Looking For Work In The MI Area

Mike,
Just watch yourself, on this other board I go to, this guy who worked for them was telling us that these Lead companys sell those Leads over and over again. also you get allot of people looking for the cheap guys. or they have a ton of work and little money to work with just watch them, cause they will send you 8 to 10 leads and the next thing you get a charge on your credit card for $300.00 dollars and you haven't even made a sale.
Have you called other contractors in your area, see if they can use some help or maybe farm some work your way? I have been getting more calls for estimates lately, so who knows maybe things will start picking up, Spring is three weeks out yeah right LOL! but I am getting more calls. Hope it picks up for you. If I can do alright this Spring and Summer I will put more away then in the past. Then maybe move to Texas who knows.

Re: Looking For Work In The MI Area

I dont like the sound of the leads companies doing that. Im not sure how servicemagic works as far as how they charge. Bidclerk you pay liek $45 a month and just watch the website for jobs. Only problem wit them is in the past 6 months theres only been like 2 jobs in my area so I dont think paying monthly is worth it being most of the time there is no jobs.

There is a huge lake I fish about 35 miles away and its full of filthy rich people. There is over 900 houses on the lake and Ive seen one up forsale for 15million. There is lots of million+ houses on it. You can advertise on the lake associations website for $100 a year. I'll probably advertise with them, I think its worth the money.
