Help With Finding Work...

Hi all, I'm quite new to this site. I have a question for all of you, what would be the best way to find construction type work in Spartanburg, SC?

Right now I live in New York, and work with brother and Uncle who are both contractors. I can do General Construction labor ie: a little of everything. I can do most of paint, drywall/plastering, somewhat carpentry, roofing, siding and more.

Problem is, I am a high school dropout do to personal reasons, and cant find any construction work anywhere that doesn't ask for High school diploma or GED.

I want to move to SC, but I need to find a job there first, and I want to do construction as eventually I want to open up my own company. Keep in mind, I am turning 18 in 3 months. I'm from Brest, Belarus. My grandfather was a mason, and my dad an Excavator worker.

Re: Help With Finding Work...

I've never heard of any contractor asking for a diploma....Most will listen to you about your background...hire you...and they will know before lunchtime weather they are going to keep you on or not...anyway...this will give you a ttt...good luck

Re: Help With Finding Work...

I guess I should have been more clear, I looked at the newspaper classifieds, and monster.com. The problem is, I need to be able to move and already have a definite job. I guess the best way to go about it is to save up, find an apartment, move into the apartment, and then find the job? Save up half year or year of rent money? This is difficult.

I don't see you locking in a job from three states away without doing some legwork.
Start contacting construction companies to find out who's hiring in your area of expertise.
Make a list of those who are.
Make a trip, show them how you work.
Work smart, work hard, pay attention.
If you get hired, get your apartment.
You'll need to live out of a hotel, a friend's house or your car for a few weeks until you can land the job and the apartment. (I wouldn't recommend the car)
Have good references for the apartment because your length of time on job will hurt you in securing one.
Move down.
Stay employed (is there a chance the company will reduce it's workforce in the foreseeable future?)

Just about any Contractor will hire you if you show up on time, and work hard all the time, show the idiots that keeping busy is the way to go. If you tell them that they don't have to pay you if they are not happy will work also!!! Even today, I use that line on some clients of mine.......I tell them "If your not happy with what I do.....I do not deserve to be paid......By the way......I always get the job and get paid!!!! Good Luck....just go....you will be working in a couple of days. Peace....Good Luck!! P.S. Go to college....before its too late!!!!

Re: Help With Finding Work...

Well what I want to do is work for a contractor for several years, then open my own business in construction, landscaping or something of the sort. Right now I want to get my GED here because it will be much easier, then go to school for an MBA, that way I learn more about the business side of things.

North Tonawanda. Buffalo area of New York.

I'm wondering, do Contractors look at where you come from? I know it might sound like a strange question, but here in NT, past Russians made a bad reputation and sometimes you notice unfair treatment.
